I am the chairman of a pull held during our yearly show(that I will not name). The current format is Friday night we pull tractors that would be in the category of Div I & II NATPA, and Saturday we pull low gear antique(DIV III?) and outlaw. What has happened is the Friday pull has become VERY successful, and the Saturday pull has dropped way off over the last few years, not to mention the constant whining and crying I experience with the modified tractors. I am not knocking folks with built tractors, but the question is: should I pull the same classes on Saturday that are already pulling on Friday, and cut the modified tractors out, or leave it the same. Keep in mind takes a good showing to help re-coop expenses, and the way I feel about it is, if the people with the hotter tractors for Saturday don't care to show up and support, maybe I should say the heck with them and pull the classes that are having the much better turnout. Thoughts..... .

Well, you asked for opinions----and I'm sure mine isn't going to be very popular. Perhaps it's time to think about divorcing the "pull" from the rest of the event. Given current trends in "outlaw" or modified tractor antique tractor pulling, it's only a matter of time before someone's ill-conceived modifications, nearly complete lack of safety precautions, the pressure to win, and the completely insane notion of letting these machines compete with unlimited RPM, is going to kill a puller, or worse, innocent bystanders. WHEN, not IF, that happens, the insurance companies are going to pull the plug. They'll insure your show, but not if there is pulling involved. And any time you don't think there's a good deal of idiocy involved in antique tractor pulling, I'd suggest you go read a few pages of posts on the "Tractor Pulling" Forum of this site and judge for yourself.

A pull can be held safely using good rules like NATPA and enforcing them. I agree that the Open / no rules especially in regards to RPMS is not using good judgment and will be the end to this sport as more people are killed and injured. Anyone that is promoting / sponsoring a tractor pull that does not have a sensible RPM rules that are enforced are prime candidates to loose everything they have ever worked for in a lawsuit and should loose everything if someone in the crowd is killed because of ""open/no"" rules. It is not just the club, it is the board members - promoters and those responsible for enforcing safety rules of the event that are liable.

eliminate the 1st gear rule..have a speed limit of like 4 or 5 mph....since not all tractors have the same 1st gear speeds....

Why do you have a Div III antique pull and limit it to just low gear? Let em go, some want to see a little more action. That should bring them in there on a Saturday, I'm up in the northeast and we just have two classes, stock and open. We haven't the number of open tractors yet to make it worth while to have the five divisions, but pulling keeps on growing. As Super Lurker wrote, fair rules are for everyone.... I've seen pulling events grow just because the rules were enforced. Just my 2 cents

Some have asked to have an open class at our pull. The concern I have as a promoter is that someone brings in a tractor and spins it way to hard and it blows up flywheel killing someone in the crowd, maybe that someone is your kid. You know who's as*^% is on the line, it is the promoter, your rules allowed him to run that hard. I have a hard time believing that any insurance company would stand behind an motor sport event that does not have some type of rules around engine detonation safety. I do not mind the open rules in general, but there has to be a RPM rule. We can keep the tractor out of the stands but we can not keep parts of it from entering the stands without some rules. The death that occured at the Marion County Fair in Kentucky is not something that I want to have happen ever again and for sure not at an event I am working at promoting.

TOOT; over the years I have been there on Fri. or Sat. or both. The stock classes have really grown over the years and the modifieds have remained even or fell off some. That is the way it has gotten at some of the other pulls farther south and also southeast of you. Remember there are alot more antique pulls now than there used to be. Pullers now have to pick and choose where to go. I have left there saying I won't be back, and I have missed a time or two, but I did return. I believe it would help if you all had a more defined set of rules and stuck with them. Fair rules are good for everyone. I also believe it would help alot if the track was in better shape to start with and kelp up better. Not only scrap the track but pack it after each puller or at least between classes. If there was a packer on site the last couple of years, I sure missed it. Fix the ditch at the 75 foot mark and add a little water sometime. Dry dirt in deep holes isn't fair to anyone. I'll be back again, but I do have other pulls that are not that far away on the same day. I'll bet most of the griping comes from the prima-donna outlaw pullers who bi--h everywhere they go.

You have some good points, but remember help is very scarce, you can't really get any track maintaining equipment to speak of because of limited space, and we are in constant battle with the city because it's their property and they could care less about that show in my opinion, and moving is about out of the question due to the permanant fixtures, and 30+ years of heritage. Attendance was good on Sat until this year. Remember we are a show, not a pulling club solely devoted to pulling monthly. Crap, I've added classes upon classes trying to have something for everyone. Even Sprngfield club's attendance really stunk this year compared to year's past. You seem to know who I am, I wish I knew who you were.

Toot, you do know who I am, not sure about Superlurker. You and I have spoken about this and some other things that have happened at the show. If your not getting support from the town and/or show, then you're really up agaist the wall. Is the pull paying for itself, making the club money or breaking even? I personally like the 2 day format, but it's your call. If the club isn't behind you, you might think about skipping a year, and see how they like that. SL did have some good points. The track could be better, but you're kind of cornered on that. The rules could be cleared up some. As for help during the pull, ask for volunteers----most other pulls do. Stock tractor numbers are up and modified are down at most all pulls this year. The number 1 thing you really must do is back the crowd up some in all classes, especially the Outlaws. Make people sit inside the baseball field on that side and put a rope, etc. down the other side. Hope you get it worked out before next year.

I thought you pulled the outlaw class on Friday night. It seemed like a good turnout but you are probably loosing some pullers to the Chapel Hill event. Me thinks you do a good job. One thing that works it talking to the pullers and letting them know you need a good showing and their support.

If your looking strictly at econimics then the tractors that draw the largest crowd is the way to go. If the pull is for the participants then I would cater to the pullers. You can never satisify all of the pullers. You can come to a happy medium and have fun which is what tractor pulling is suppose to be about.

seems the stock classes are growing everywhere you go, guys just don't want to spend the money to go fast even if they want too. i don't know where your pull happen but where we pull the pulls are growing but in the stock and modified classes the 8 and 12 mph are just for play. guys just can't seems to go to pull against 2 or 3 other tractors. but we are having fun in the other classes, pulled last weekend with 27 in the 4500-5000-6000# classes.my 2 cents worth and pulling 4mph classes with the ky boys.

The faster tractors do hold the crowd alot better. I have noticed at stock pulls, the crowd thins out a whole lot after the first 5-6 classes. The key is to charge enough at the gate and give people a show worth comming to. I have nothing against slow tractors and everyone has a fair right to have fun, but the antique and outlaw guys don't want to set and watch 50 slow JD's for 2 hrs. between classes and the crowd probably gets tired of it too. The Div. 3 tractors have fallen off a bunch, but most of it is because of the inconsistent rules between the many diff clubs in the area, crappy tracks everywhere you go, and starting the pulls @ 12:00pm when it is 350 degs. in the shade. there is no reason that clubs can't sart a pull that hasn't any FS classes @ 5:00 and get done at a decent time. Most people have to work on Sat. and have get things done. I'm sure the spectators are the same way. OH, ADVERTISE!!

I pull in Central Michigan and I supervise a once a year fair pull. I have noticed that night pulls and fair pull usually start on the time scheduled. The sat. and sun. barnyard pulls don't seem to understand the importance of our time. When I go to a pull and it starts an hour or better late I get PSSS unless it weather related. We can all understand the good lord giving us a track that needs more drying but consistantly late make me just want to stay home or go somewhere else. I think that the 1st gear rule is necessary in a class where you need to equalize the completely stock verse's the slightly modified. Just my opinion as I have never pulled at your track.
