I recently went to a pull in Hopkinsville, ky and saw a few tractors pull in 3500lb, open class. I was wondering how much hp is needed for this class? We have a tractor that can get into this class fairly easy, it weighs 3550 now. Just would like to know how much hp we would need. Will 100 be enough?

For a 4 cyl engine anywhere from 100 to 130hp and for a 6 cyl, 100 to 150hp

Outlaw=anygear any rpms. There are several ways of looking at it. If you are under 500 cubes then you have to turn some rpms. If you got 600 and its built right then you can keep it below 3 grand. With a 4 cyl you might be at a disadvantage but you can still drop a gear and run the rpms at the top of your limit and not run 18.4 38s then balance it very well.
I heard an 88 not all that bad beat a 400 ci oliver cranking 4k and a 600 ci oliver built for div 4 by pulling 2nd gear and hooking it up right at Clarksville Tn last night. The most important thing is to have fun when you pull the ears back.

If your tractor is well balanced in 3500, 100hp might work well enough to win. I don't know what you are pulling, but there are several 88 Olivers, a few M Farmalls, DC/CC Cases that can get down there. Several of those can make 150-200 at higher RPM. Even though those tractors won't be very well balanced, they will be turning a lot of wheel speed. It really depends on what your rules say.

it is a case C, basically a cc/dc. It is balanced very well, our rules don't allow something like this but I would like to take it to where it would be allowed. I plan on keeping it stock looking.

100 is more than enough. I spin 15.5x38 cuts at 2600rpm, have to watch my speed in 12mph class. In this light class balance is more important than HP!

are you talking about open or outlaw? Open class at Hopkinsville is 6 mph and 20% over on r's..... ...outlaw is any speed any RPM..... there are some tractors in the outlaw that pull here that are pushing 200-250 HP in the light outlaw classes

The outlaw 77 I used to own could run in the 3500 and it was 300+ when it was right. That was around 6000-7000 rpm's. I think I'm going to have to tune her back up for its new owners!! Watch Out!!!

He never said he had a 77 engine or even an Oliver/Waukesha. Any thing is possible if you can aFORD it. :)

You're right, I know some people that can afford it and still can't cut the mustard. They end up buying someone else's toy. It's their ballgame now. I have the trophy's to prove that I've belted a few out of the park!! I love the curiosity that everyone shares about the ole primered up machine!! I guess because I didn't have $20,000+ invested in it, I wasn't right. I dynoed my tractor with a water brake dyno that mounted to the engine. I have a few parts left, Might have to build one for the record books.

Don't go get all excited. There are plenty of other bumble bees out there too. Nobodys picking on you. Allises with 292's, I-Hs with truck motors. No big deal.

Now you got big cubes turning up the R's and who knows where it will end. One thing for sure. What worked last year might be 3rd place this coming year.

It will stop when someone blows one all to heck and get some one killed. I only know of two tractors that had steel flywheels and steel driveshaft loops in them. Cody's tractor was one of them. They can't get them big cube engines to stay together @ 3000rpm, much less 5K. the lack of rules is what is hurting the class. I guess I could put a 318 crysler in mine cause it was available in an Oliver combine!! I hate to say the end is near, but if safety isn't addressed, then we can all stay at home.
