Which tractor is a better puller: JD730 gas, JD730 diesel, or JD G??? I'm assuming tractors are equally weighted; and, balanced with drivers who know how to pull... Just curious; because, I'm a big 730/G fan.

By the way, last weekend I saw a JD A out pull a JD R! The A was properly weighted; and, the driver was (obviously) an experienced puller. Never thought I'd see an A out pull an R though...

The 730 gas or diesel will out pull a G on the track. If the 730 has a creeper gear you will be able to pull up to 10500 and have no shortage of power. I pull both a G and a 720 diesel, my G has 16.9's and will power out in 7500lb unless the track is gravel. My 720 has creeper gear with 18.4's, has less power than my G and have yet to run out of power and I've pulled up to 11,000lbs.

It's all going to to come down to the individual tractors, but generally speaking, a stock 730 (gas OR diesel) should beat up on a stock "G" pretty good. In addition to the horsepower advantage of the later tractor, I believe the 730 has a lower first gear than the "G", which gives them more grunt on a good hooking track. A decent running "G" should have enough power to spin out in first gear at just about any weight, but the lower gear of the 730 should allow you to back off the throttle some to keep the rear tires hooked up at the end of the pull. It's not too hard to believe an "A" could outpull an "R", as it's pretty easy to get comparable horsepower out of an "A", and the later ones also had the creeper first gear. The "R" was designed to be a heavyweight workhorse, so it if was fairly stripped down and pulling light, it would have trouble putting all that torque to the ground. I love my "G", but I'm pretty sure that all things being equal and with both tractors pulling their best, my "60" will probably take it, because it also has the creeper first gear.

i don't think these creeper gears live up to al the "hype" around them....if their is an ALL stock class I wil admit they tear it up out their...but for like a div.2 or more tractor they don't do very well from what i see....people stroke their tractors 1/2 in and max bore with water in the block and run second gear and spin over them.... but then again i saw one of those B's with an slow gear whoop a second gear M, but the B had a power block so it wasn't completely stock either...I am not trying to down them because i have paid quite a pretty penny for a M Farmall with a creeper gear that i will restore and pull.....It all depends on what u want to pull

The G would make a better puller. I havnt seen very many 730s go down the track but I think everyone would agree that a G would do a better job.

it is possible to get more power out of a John Deere 730 if you did stuff right, and it's longer. but, a G you can get lighter and it meets year limits and you can still get alot of power with.
