John Deere A Question

I am working on a 1945 John Deere A handstart. This tractor starts hard, sometimes can't get it running at all- it will fire(ussually once), but won't keep going. It will also blow back through the carb soemtimes. I have been told this can be caused by plugs,wires. I put new points & condensor in the magneto,new copper core plug wires,and new Champion D21 spark plugs. According to the timing marks,the timing is right. I put new needles and gaskets in the carb and the motor is getting gas. I switched from 87oct. pump gas to half 115oct race gas/half 93 oct pump gas. Is this a good combo? The tractor has a Heistler head,DLTX 71 carb, still has std bore/stroke. I hear some Champion plugs aren't that good, is this true? Is it better to use a hot plug or cold plug on a JD? I am just trying to ideas on what to try next. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks, Mike

I agree you may want to check the magneto. We had a B that had to be pulled to start and found that the shaft to the magneto was bent and causing a whipping action in the cap. If you got it started it ran fine but starting by hand or electric cranking was next to impossible. Rebuilt mag and she works fine.

Hey Mike I just got done with a B that would hit on one cylinder and was wery hard to hand crank.I went ahead and cleaned the carburator to eliminate that problem but found the problem was in the distributor cap.One contact prong was worn down lots more than the the other.Number two contact was having to jump fire farther than number one.Put on a good used cap and now it will start on the second pull.This one also had Champions in it(took them out first thing).They work good in just about everything but these old two cylinder tractors.I use C87 AC plugs with good results.Good luck and hope this helps.

I had an ol A that did that too!! It was a hand cranker one night It broke my hand trying to start it!! HA HA. Is the carb in good shape?? It sounds like the timing may be a little off too. You may also have an intake valve too tight. And is holding it open when the engine warms up, it will close completly when the engine is cold, but as it warms up, the poping gets worse. Yo umay want to get rid of that mag and get a distributor. Recheck your point gap in the mag as well, If you just put this together, just go over everything again, Valve lash, carb settings, ignition timing, (don't go by the book!!) when you step up the compression the timing will need to be changed a bit, Probably need to be advanced a few degrees. Just my nickels worth. Chads
