Can someone post the formula for the Ideal Gas Law? I believe that was the name of the formula used to calculate compression ratios based on cranking compression numbers and environmental factors. We're having a discussion about compression pressures and ratios on another forum, and some guys are interested in seeing the formula. Thanks in advance.

It is called the Universal Gas Law.

If you can get in touch with G-Taylor, who used to visit this board regularly a few years ago, he can explain it better than anyone I know of.

Pressure X volume = Number of molecules X r (gas constant x temperature. PV =nRT

Given that 1 atmosphere i 14.7psi absolute, and R is a constant, the formula can produce the obvious conclusions:

Better cylinder filling increases n
Forced induction increases N and initial P, but usually also T unless you're intercooled.
As P rises from compression (shrinking V), T will want to rise also. This is the way diesels work.

If someone had told me that gas physics actually applied to automobiles I would have paid a lot more attention in class.

I never heard of the ideal gas law but;there is an ideal stochiometric air/fuel ratio of 14.7 to 1. This is by weight not volume. For any given bore and stroke configuration you can only fill the cylinder under normal atmospheric pressure with so much on the intake stroke. This is where porting and valving are crucial. Run it richer on the scale more spark is required up to a point of oversaturation. Run it leaner and you get detonation or a lean misfire. Also hotter temps. are when leaned out.

i think that is ((pressure1 x volume 1)/temp1) = ((pressure2 x volume 2)/temp2) but its going to be more complicated if fuel is in the air (its not "ideal" anymore) don't bust a gasket.
