The factory (Oliver) started putting the 3-71 Detroit into production machines as an option for the 1954 Super 99's. I am sure that they played around with them a few years before to work out any bugs. Anyone know when the '54's came out? Was it in the fall of '53 like cars are done nowdays? They tested out at 79 max. PTO horsepower at Nebraska. Some of the corrected to sea level numbers show it at around 84HP if memory serves me.

The Massey 98 is actually an Oliver 990. It is rated at 84 max. PTO horsepower by the Nebraska tests. They were run at at bit more RPM (1800 rpm rated vs 1675) than the Super 99. The 995 was the same as the 990 except it added a torque converter and was rated at 2000 rpm. High idle would have been about 200 rpm more. The 990/995 is a 1958 model, I think the 98 was introduced the following year by Massey. Production only lasted for two years on the Massey version. I will have to check to verify the Massey model's production years.

A natural aspirated 3-71 four valve with the 19 to 1 "N" piston/sleeves will make 135HP at 2300rpm with N70 injectors. Without being over fueled.
