I am afraid I am about to open a Pandora's box, but...

How does one go about deciding which association to participate in? If one is interested in antique pulling in central & southern Illinois, there appear to be two or three choices.

1. ITPA (Illinois Tractor Pulling Assn)
2. USAP (United States Antique Pulllers)
3. some fairs/festivals apparantly offer events not sanctioned by any organizations.
4. NATPA (but not much of them in Illinois)

So how does one go about deciding who they want to play with??

Have there always been so many tractor pulling associations, or did all this fractionizing (it appears to also be present on the national level)happen in the last few years?

Do like we do. go to different places and see which you like. I haven't attended a USAP or NATPA pull but have been to several who use adaptions of their rules. Like we live in ALabama and we use 18 inch hitch. In GA use 20 and Miss us 18 and no hang on weights. We just adapt to where we are going.

I don't know much about the ITPA, But can tell you that Both, the NATPA, and the USAP, are great organizations!!! The USAP web site is www.usapuller.com and www.natpa.com, I belive that is the NATPA site address, The Usap has a winter pulling schedule all the pulls are in Princeton, Indiana, Their championship pull is Thanksgiving weekend. The Natpa has alot of pulls though out the Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, MO, ALL OVER THE PLACE! To the best of my knowledge the NATPA was christed back in 96or97, the Usap started in 99. Been growing ever since!!!! Alot of hard work from the pullers from both organizations is what made the clubs so great. Pick one, two, or three, or all of the above. Just my opinion, ChadS

Chads:
You will have to go back a few more years for NATPA's original organization. I pulled in Spring Grove, Mn. in a Regional in 1996 I think it was to go on to the National pulls. Didn't do the best. Placed 26th out of about 130 tractors in 5500 lb. I think the National pull was at Columbus, OH that year. I think 1994 was the year they organized. Not sure.---deadeye

Yep, you are right. it was 1994. They were still trying at the time to organize an national organization. But, I was thinking the NATPA's first national championship pull was at Hartford KY, or Columbia MO. in 96 or 97. I went to Columbia back in 98 when they had a regional, and the championship pull the next day. I did not do so well either, the track was pure sand at the time, Ol Wheeler put a hurting on all of us in the 3500 class that year with his Super H. Chads
