can a 466 crank out of a newer jd fit into a 1968 jd 4020 with 404, I am looking for a way to make more cubes in my 4020. I have heard of guys with old 4020s with all most 600 cubes in them. whats your opinion? I pull in a no turbo farm class. whats a good recipe for a large cube engine. I already pull with my 4020 and do quit well with it but there are some tractors that pull against me with some major cubes like mm g1000's, they are hard to beat and there seems to be getting more of them coming to the pulls. thanks

The stroke of a 404 and 466 crankshaft are the same-- 4.75 inches. The bore changes from 4.25 in the 404 to 4.56 in the 466 engine. The other 62 cubic inches come from the difference in the bore diameter.

The stroke and the rod and main measurements are the same on a 466 and the 404 crank. The cranks are interchangeable and you can take a crank out of a 4840 and put it in a 4020. If it has the rear drive oil pump gear on the crankshaft you will have to grind about 1/16 of an inch off the block so the crankshaft will turn. The only other difference I know is the number of bolts that fasten the flywheel to the crank: A 4020 has 4 some 404 and 466 have 6 holes you will have to plug 2 of them so the engine oil will not leak through onto the clutch.

I'm the wrong one to ask on that subject. I've never had the experience of putting a 466 crank in a 4020, but I imagine it could be done. How much work it would take, I can't say. All of the new Deeres (1960 and up) I play with and work on are stock farm tractors. I'm sure one of the hotrodders on here can fix you up with the right info. I believe there is also an outfit called Special Things that specializes in hopping up 4020s. They have a website that I've been to. Just search under Special Things.
