I'm running crater type high compression pistons for a farmall 350 in my H and I was wondering how much cold clearance I need between the top of the pistion and the head. Or would it be a better idea to run a 350 LP head, I need all the power I can get.

You can mill a H head .125 and still maintain strength in the head. I have a SH with firecraters in it,I had to do some light clearance work on the pistons to make the pistons fit the head. Find a SH-350 gas head, with the proper machine work, it will be close to the same hp increase to the lp head. Use a thin copper head gasket to increase compression a little more. A good compression reading is 150-180psi at cranking speed. Email me for more info on building a H if you like. ChadS

There is a mill limit on all the IH heads. If you exceed it by a lot you are giving up a lot of the strength of the head. There are better ways to raise compression. Thinner gaskets and better pistons are two of them that come to mind. Just an idea.

Don't go over.100 milled off the head.If you need all the power you can get, forget the pistons you have and have it bored to use 305 chevy pistons. That is a 3.75 bore.I built a motor for a guy using those pistons, running turbo blue fuel and if he does his part driving, there ain't much in our area that will come close to it.It pulls division 3,3000-4500# class.

How much hp comes out of a 3.75 bore? Does he use flat top pistons? I dyno out at 47hp on regular unleaded and my 3.5 bore. There is a hot rod unstyled JD A that I can't touch. I don't believe I can mill any more off my head. Leaning toward a high lift cam and possibly running those 305 chevys without sleeves. Save me boring her out again. What's the piston pin size on standard 305 pistons? Thanks for the input.

How many hp are you looking for out of your H? Did you know you could build a 70+hp H using all IH parts? More later Chads

806 gas pistons. H rods, stroker crank from 5 inches up to 5-3/4inches. The 806 pistons work in strokers 5in - 5-3/4in. They are 3-13/16 bore. A good camshaft is required, Email me at [email protected] for more info. Hope this helps. ChadS

A friend pulled his sleeves out and dropped pistons in(don't know what comp pistons). Shaved .250 off the head. While breaking it in on the dyno his exhaust suddenly turned white. It broke through the water passage. And this was running pump gas so it couldn't have been over 10 to 1. I don't know if the head had been shaved before or not. My $.02
