I use all 3 of my tractors for work and don't have one to spare for pulling, and I'm not brand loyal. I'd like to pull 4500-6000 and need info on everyone's opinion as to the best model for this weight range. I don't want to start a big who-ha on Farmall vs. JD vs. Oliver vs. MM vs. Case. Just simply would like everyone's input as to if you were stating from scratch what make/model would you pull in 4500-6000 considering power/weight ratio, balance, availability, and potential for modification. thanks.

I am sorry that all these " grown men" are fussing over color or whatever. If you plan on a "stock" puller I would recommend a big 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder, a big case d,dc, l,la or 800 with case o matic is hard to beat, stock. If you plan on pulling in open, whoever has the most money wins, there are more parts for a jd as a chevy. Case, Oliver, MM are still relatively easy to find a decent price. prepare to pay for green paint. I pull a stock case dc, 53 model it has 4 inch pistons, good head withis stock and I compete in 5500 class. repeatedly beats stock M,jd a, and other's in class. There again any one can beat you any given day. Just spend alot of time setting it up, right air pressure, timing set, and hitch height.

Case DC's pull real good when set up right. Stock weight 5300lbs and they don't cost alot

Thanks for all the great advise!! I lean toward the Farmall M, but am not sure. I really thought some of the MM guys would speak up for the UTU??

you can say all you want about your olivers and farmalls, but the UB that gets down to 4500# is tough to beat. But why shouldnt, it has more cubes and more HP.

The U is a 6000# tractor. What is required to get it down to 4500#. Must be more than the standard stripping?

That's because the MM pullers don't like to pick on the baby tractors, they stay up where the meat is. Ask the same ? and go from 6 or 6500 up and see what kinda response you get. MM

Personally, mine doesn't do well until 6500 and up, and it's not a big horsepower machine. Doesn't balance real well in the light classes.

However, I have seen one in 4500 that was really wicked.

Would this be the tractor that you spent all that hard earned money buying parts from Dennys and Sharps for?

Nope, it would have even less power than stock with parts from Denny's. But if I ever want to get beat by a Cub Cadet, I'll give em both a call.

Does that Cub have them magic pistons in it? I bet it has over 100hp with all that Denny's overpriced junk on it.

Next time you call me names make sure I typed the words. Check the ISP numbers, unless you are not smart enough to do that either. Gee, who's the moron now, Blob???

125HP Cub Cadet. Guaranteed? Must be the same dyno used by a certain unnamed vendor of parts to guarantee those hp out of tractors. Explains a whole lot!

There is only one choice I can think of since you
did say 4500-6000. The Oliver 88 and Super 88. I like the Farmall M from 5000-6500, 4500 your talking aluminum radiators and stuff, ie big bucks.Unstyled JD A are great pullers in 4500, but you will be leaning on them at 6000lbs since they don't have crawler gears. Styled A's are like Farmall M's 5000-6500. With pressed steel wheels 6 cylinders and 6 gears
an Oliver balances well has good gear selection and huge hp potential. 1/8" overbore and 1650 head with mild port work yeilds about 85-90 hp they tell me.

you

I pulled Saturday night in Division II and the winner in 6,500 lb. class was a 1951 John Deere A, second went to a Minneapolis Moline G and I got 3rd with my 1951 John Deere A...1 inch from second place and 1 foot from first place. In the 5,500 lb class a Farmall M got first, A Case DC got 2nd and a 60 John Deere got 3rd. I think it's tough to pick a tractor and say it's the best because it all depends on what you do with it and the track conditions at the time of the pull. Good luck.

I am from central Minnesota. I what I notcice sticking out in those classes are the Farmall MD's and also the Super MTA. The straight M's and Super M's also don't do that bad. But as you can tell I like the red tractors and won't buy any other kind, but that is just me. Good luck which ever bred you go with.

If I was you I would go with a Farmall M. My neighbors have done alittle coon tuning to their M's engine and other things and have ended up with a hot pulling tractor in my area.
