JUST WENT THROUGH THIS MESS WITH MY 1953 SUPER (m)
4-1/8" BORE !! AFTER REBUILD HAD EXACTLY 105 COMPRESSION. STOCK SAYS 120 (C) CHECK YOUR HEAD NUMBER ON THE TOP OF THE HEAD FRONT RITE SIDE IS A CASTING NUMBER !! IF IT SAYS
8777 THROUGH IT AWAY 8060D IS BETTER !!!
BUT YOU NEED A 450 GAS HEAD . HAVE YOU CC THE HEAD YET. I DID AN ENTIRE REBUILD PORTED AND POLISHED THE HEAD BIG CARB AND CAM !!! NEVER CHECKED THE HEAD CASTING NUMBER !!! ENDED UP WITH CRAPP !!!! JUST CHANGED THE HEAD AND STARTED PULLING AGAIN. IT'S LIKE A BRAND NEW DATE

SEE YAAAA

What camshaft? A stock engine can have more compression pressure than an engine with higher mechanical ratio domed pistons and a long duration cam.

Sounds like you have a large chambered head. I recently worked on a SM that had the same problem. We put on a 450gas head milled about 100 thousandths, and a thinner copper head gasket, his compression is now 185psi. Hope this helps ChadS
