Finally got a chance to test my 1951 John Deere R and it got me down. I pulled at my county fair's tug pull this past wednesday night/thursday morning. I didn't get to pull till 2 in the morning on thursday. there were about seven guys in my class (8501 lbs. and up). Two oliver 1950s, a JD 4020, a sooped up cockshut 50 or 40, a JD 730 diesel, my R and a big case tractor. They started us off at 12,500 lbs to pull when we should have been starting off around 8500 or so. I got to the line (nervous as could be) and put her to half throttle (my big mistake) and then eased the clutch in. She lifted the front end and I got spooked but still held her. I felt as if the tractor wasn't moving and then she starte to lose power so I gunned the throttle all the way but it was too late and she died. After all that time of waiting I only moved the sled a few feet. I was really depressed and still am upset. Would it have made a difference if I had held the throttle full out on it and then pulled? Do R's do good in tug/percent pulls? Or do they do better in speed pulls with the sleds that have the moving weights. If you guys could help me be a better puller I'd appreciate it. A friend told me before the pull to just "have fun" I would have if I could have moved the sled but it's pretty hard when you look like an idiot. Thanks again.

Thanks for the encouragement gentlemen. I truly appreciate it. I've watched the video a lot recently and have just about got her figured out for the next time. I've got a machinery show comin up second weekend of august and they have a fun pull (no entry fee and no prizes..just for braggin rights). Just have to talk a good friend of mine into haulin the R down there. By the way, do R's do better in pulls with normal sleds (ie. sleds with the weight progressively moving to the front of the sled)? I was supposed to pull in one of those pulls the night before but had an interesting story come about for that night. I was weighed in at 8620 pounds so I was 120 lbs overe the 8500 limit. They stuck me in the 9500 class since I couldn't get any weights off the tractor (the outside wheel weights had never been taken off). I waited through the 55, 65 and 7500 classes. Then they did an exibition pull with a couple of suped up dodge trucks (one of which threw his driveshaft) and then they brought up the 85's. Half way through the normal truck class (which was before me) there came a very nasty storm. It poured cats and dogs and lightning and thundered like never before. I was stuck in a line of traffic right at the end of the pulling track. It was deffinitely a good story to tell. My pants probably weighed ten pounds when I got off that tractor finally. It was fun though. I'm lookin forward to the next pull. I know, like the guy said earlier, that R's can pull. She wouldn't have died if I had gave her more throttle. A buddy of mine also said that this track was one of the worst in the county. There was a little gibson there and he didn't even budge the sled (only 2500lbs.) But at another festival in the county that same tractor pulled 200 and some percent of it's weight. It's all hindsight now anyway but I am learning everytime and lookin forward to goin back and showin 'em what the R can do. Thanks again and God bless.

I just can't believe that an "R" would ever run out of power in 1st gear.... The "R"'s, and 820's I have seen will lift the front, and not even change the sound of the exhaust...!! I figure you have a fuel problem... One fella here at the Plain City pull, in Ohio claims to have 140 HP, with his 820.. Hope you get it figured out...!!! Good Luck....The "R"'s are GOOD Pullers....!!

Haha!! Welcome to the world of tractor pulling. Been their done that. The only thing you can do is keep doing it. You have to find out how your tractor handles and what it can do. If you can video tape your pull that is a big help. I always do and you would be surprised all the things you could of or should of done.
GOOD LUCK! and HAVE FUN!

my first pull i got nineth out of 36 in our farmall 450. I started out good but i let forward the ta to early so my rpms werent up and pulled the ta to late and spun out about five feet after. I got it on video tape and watched it a million times to see what i did wrong. that really helped me. my neighbor has a stock r and he usually is in the middle of the pack but once in a while he'll "put" up to the front. he usually gives it full throttle right as he starts going. first time is always a screw up. dont worry about it.

You made it 15 feet? hehe I hooked one time with an M-M R on 4000 open. They didn't tell me thatthey had let the entire drag sheet on the ground for that one as I was normally in 3500 with it. I pulled a whooping 1 foot 3 inchs. Tried to get a ribbon for the shortest pull but they didn't see it that way:)

Sir dont get yourself down. The key is to take off with enough steam so you can get going not to say that you'll have enough steam to pull along ways but throttleing up enough to get off the line is a key but sometimes you give it more than should and jerk the heck out of stuff. Remember no one looks like a fool this is for fun first time i pulled i couldnt get the slack out of chain cause I kept killing the tractor. Just live and learn and have FUN.
