I was going to be welding a set of hubs on my GVI and was wondering what welding rod to use, 7018? Should I do some preheat?

John When I welded my hubs on I used 7018 weld in the splines all around first then make 2 or 3 passes around the whole axle. when I did mine I put new axle seals in first jack up the side you are going to weld and run water on your seal to keep it from melting this works good and you can put your hub plate in closer to narrow up your wheel stance if you want just my $.02 worked real good for me for over 3 years now!

Did you preheat the axle first?

No we didn't preheat the axles and we put a set on a 4020 John Deere with a 466 bored and stroked (500hp+++) and they don't have any problems on it , We used 6011 to burn into the metal really good on a root pass and then come back with a 7018 for a cover pass and to make it look good. That is exactly how we done it , the 6011 really cut into the hub with the heat turned up on the welder so it made it look really good when we come back with the 7018 and covered it.

for what it's worth farmall the minnie has a splined axle the f-30 has the same spline slide it on the axle lock it down. f-30 had 6 large bolt holes 9 bolt pattern can be drilled in this face with no problem. all you need is a drill press. this setup is much better than weld on also much stronger.ps they come off easy if needed. see ya doc.

WHY? weld on hubs when you can bolt on light weight hubs that are strong. get a set of f-30 farmall hubs same spline drill your 9 bolt pattern in them and your on your way. happy pulling, doc joe

WHY deal with getting a set of hubs off a f30 and boring them out when a set of 9 bolts hubs that would fit the axle are only about $50 and are a lot easier to come by.

Use the 7018's preheat the axle, its 3" across and your weld on plates are probably 1/2".

6010's make an excellant root pass rod. Then as old geezer said use 7018. Use multipls narrow passes rather than weaving a wide bead. the wider the bead, the more shrinkage, creating more internal stress, making it more prone to crack. I would do at least 3 passes.

use a 6011 root pass for good penetration and then come back and put a 7018 cover pass, watch your heat and NEVER use water to cool it

I DON'T REMEMBER WHAT ROD WE USED AS NOW WE USE THE WIRE FEED LA-90 DON'T PRE-HEAT WELD ABOUT 1 TO 2 INCHES AT A TIME THEN LET IT COOL AND WELD ON THE OTHER SIDE OF YOUR WELD () SOMETHING LIKE THAT.THIS HELPS TO KEEP IT TRUE WHEN YOU ARE WELDING IT TOGETHER WHEN YOU GET ALL THE WAY AROUND IT THEN DO A FULL PASS ALL THE WAY AROUND IT.
