I have both, which tractor would make the best pulling tractor.

We have a stock 77 that regularly pulls against a slightly modified WD 45. It is pretty even but the 77 generally wins. We also have an 88 that has pulled against it and it was pretty pathetic

No doubt the 88 will put out more power but in all fairness I have seen some mean WD45's that are hard to beat in the lighter classes. Both are reasonable to build to get a few more hp out of them but nothin' lokks as good as an old Ollie taking home the trophys on pull day....770

It would be crazy not to go with the Oliver. More parts,more technology, and easy horse power. In my opinion their would be no comparison. You can easily put the 310 (1850 gas motor) in the 88. Their is just so much more you can do with an 88.

I would go with the 88. I already have one and I have seen them pull, and they do pretty good.

I pull a wd with 45 engine and have beaten 88's before. Both are great pullers. Go with the one where you will have less competition in your area.

i have been to many stock pulls and never seen a wd 45 come close to an 88 or super ifact seen 77 and 770 embarace them

Have you ever heard of a D-17 series 4? They are the same motor and factory 62 horse. Up the compresion and you get more. Go with LP pistons.

Lucky you. You own the two most dominating power to weight tractors ever produced. Either one or both will be strong. Your Allis will weigh about
3,700 lbs @ 45 horsepower and can econimically be upgraded to 60 horse. Compare that with the Farmall H or JD B or Miinie Z at that same weight and 30 or less horsepower. The 88 weighs about 4350 with pressed wheels at about 60 horse as most of these were overhauled with the Super 88 kits plus can be economically be upgrade to 75 horse plus it almost has a creeper gear 1st. My conclusion however is their not direct competetors. The Allis pulls 3500, 4000, and 4500 while the Oliver pulls 4500,5000 and 5500 lb classes, so they only go head to head once and thats at the 4500lb class and their advantage Allis because you have 1000lbs of ballast to put where you want for balance, the Oliver generally spins out.

Get real! An 88 would be in 5th gear in the 4500 class (if an open class) and the Allis would be in 1st gear! The weight hanging on the allis would like nice going down the track slow and 50 feet behind the 88 and that's the truth!!

The oliver is the best tractor to pull with 2 more cyl. A oliver 88 would blow the doors off a allis WD 45 any day of the week.
