the 273s are becoming pretty rare and hard to find.

Who is/was Buda? Were they an outside jobber/vender who built engines similar to Continental or Hercules for sale to anyone?

Check out budaengine.com they have some info on this site.. they also have some parts, but they are not cheap, found better prices at dealers.

Buda was founded in 1881, starting in the railroad supply business. Got into engine and transmissions in 1907, with trucks and tractors being the main focus. Did alot of diesel design work. Got into engine-generator sets in 1926. Bought by Allis-Chalmers in 1953, became A-C's Harvey Works. Doors were closed by Duetz in 1986 when they tookover(ruined, in my opinion) A-C.

Hope this VERY brief summary helped. The story can be found in "The Allis-Chalmers Story" by C.H. Wendel.

Buda built some top of the line motors. The 40/50 motors were 7 main bearing. All very reliable, tough motors. They just didn't leave any room for them to be bored/stroked big.
