Campfire topic the other night, how many years have you been pulling? I started in 1980 myself and have pulled trucks/tractors ever since. Used to race my 454 Chevelle before that, but that is a different forum. It's great to see my kids now having fun pulling, daughter got a 3rd place on her first pull! She's been hooked for 5 years already. My son started pulling last summer and has natural talent reading a track. Someday I'll leave my tractors to the kids and they'll continue having fun. I've won classes in both trucks and tractors but is more fun to watch the kids! What's your thoughts? Don

My dad pulled 50 years ago in Indiana on a friends tractor, His dad wouldn't let him pull one of his, He also worked for Case in late 60's and 70's. I grew up at tractor pulls and probably have spent more time on pull back tractor than most spend on a tractor. My oldest brother was into pulling with my dad, they pulled my graddads Case CC and then a AC CA. MY brother died in spring of 2000 so I quit dirt track racing and took up tractor pulling. We now have a Case DC which my wife pulls and wins with, a Case CC built only for pulling, we retired grand dads CC. I have only been pulling since 2000 but am very involved with it. Setting up and reading track is like drag racing. I have started a antique tractor and engine club in our area and have put on about 10 pulls since then. I am also helping bring the sport to our area and getting friends and family involved. Many wifes and kids are now pulling and loving old tractors. We even built a sled for pedal tractors for kids to pull with.

I'd like to add that I was raised on my parents' dairy farm. The farm and Mom and Dad are gone, now. We had Farmalls, 806, 706, 656, 504, SMTA, 2H's and an AC WC with a loader. Dad never pulled and wouldn't let me pull any of his tractors. I pulled my IH504 in 1980, the year I bought it. I'm the second owner and my kids pull it now. We use it and my Oliver 1600 and AC WD to make 100 acres of hay on a friend's farm. The WD has placed first in the 4500# class in '01 and '02. I have my Grandad's H that he bought new in 1948 and am planning to restore it. Hey fergusonfan, open the checkbook and repair the Multi-power on the 165, then you'll win!

Multipower isn't exactly cheap to fix. We're talking about $1200 to $1500 to fix it.you could buy another tractor for that.Plus i think it does good considering its gotten 2nd and 3rd place on several occasions without multipower in the 5,000 stock( a class of almost 20 tractors).

Hmm..... .one pulling tractor to beat you with or two..... ..$1200 to $1500 would buy a pretty decent 65 diesel..... ..... maybe we can do without multi-power for now..... ...

I've been pulling for seven years now. I think it's very good to see kids interested in the sport. This assures diversity among the age of the pullers. I just enjoy going out there because you never know what will happen once you're chained up to the sled. Got that 2nd place last year at the fair. Maybe this year the 165 will finally get that elusive trophy!!!

The first time I pulled was when I was 12 and I'm 19 now. I can remember watching my dad and my uncle pull forever. My grandpa was the first in our family to start back when every town had a pull (SE Iowa) and the guys would jump on the sled. I have actually seen one of those before. My dad and my uncle had a pro-stock 4x4 pickup thirty years ago, and then they both got families. Now it is antiques and farm tractors. I've pulled our f-20, 560, 666, and 1486. I would have to say that the f-20 was probably the most fun. I agree with the kid up above, there aren't enough young people pulling now. My father just sits by and lets my brother and I pull, although now we can pull the 560 and 666 against each other. I've still found that the best person to read the track is my grandpa. That's what I've figured in my 7 years of pulling.

We have a similar situation. Dad pulled for thirty years, but seems to have given up on that fair trophy. My brother doesn't show any great interest in actually pulling. He just likes being a spectator. My uncle had a great MH 44, but he got caught with a tall hitch in the late 80's and hasn't been back since.....So there's a perfectly straight MH 44 just sitting.....collecting dust instead of trophies.

Yep. A good place to get started is at the fair grounds in Osky. It should be, but you still want to check, the Saturday after the Southern Iowa Fair is over. It's a great place to get started. Usually starts at 10, but the past two years it was delayed for a few hours due to rain. $10 a hook, usually 3 hooks per tractor. Plenty of classes for different levels of tractors. I would suggest farm if it is a stock M. It's put on by the Central Iowa Antique Tractor Pullers Association. Always real fun, I couldn't tell you which tractors we will have there, but definately the 560 and hopefully the 666. It's always fun to beat the old man at his own game. There's also plenty of other pulls around throughout the summer, but I think Osky is a great place to start.

I made my first pull about 3 yrs ago with a bone stock Oliver 77 just to see what it would do. Since my dad and I have gotten into collecting we have pulled a few moretimes withthe show tractors but last year we got an Oliver 8 and my uncles old Super M that we pull with now. I use the 88 and my son pulls the SM. we have alot of fun nd have met a bunch of really nice folks. I am hoping that my younger son will get interested also as it makes for some good family time .

i started pulling in 1962 with a 54 oliver 88 deisel, at the local county fairs and fall festivals in the small towns close, back then it was pretty much farm stock,so we would just turn the pump up a turn or two and give it some more revs and go in any gear you thought you could go the farthest, with men stepping on every 10 feet.the rules have changed alot since then, for safty sake.

Been around tractors all my life, collected them, and learned alot on most of them and where to find information on them. I am now 15 years old and am the smartest tractor expert in my school. Most of the time I could tell you what you would want to know. There is only five of us pulling that are under 17. Been around pulls and learned what to do, how to judge a track, and how to get by the hard spots. When I turned 13, my dad figured I was smart enough to pull the old Farmall M. Only won one class with the M, but I went out and decided to buy an Allis Chalmers WC, and an Oliver 88 to give me more of a chance to win. Hope to look forward to a winning year this year. Just tonight, had to pull a diesel F-250 out with the 88. The kid that was driving has been around tractors too, but needs to learn that flooring it doesn't help on ice and snow. Kinda wish more kids my age would start to pull, but most of them are city kids, and think us pullers are country bumkins is what the call me at least because I really like tractors.

I started pulling a Farmall 504 when I was 9 years old. Got a second place ribbon the first time out. That was back in 1968. My dad has been pulling for over 50 years now. He's 75 and made the entire winter circuit last year. We're pretty proud of him for that. It's has been a great sport in our family. It has tought patience and respect and humility and integrity. Its one sport where you learn alot more by listening to an old time veteran then you can by buying the video at Walmart. Tons of great friends and memories have been made and I hope that there are alot more to come.

I started in 1976 and have pulled garden tractors and antiques since then. I have worn out three kids and two grandkids so far. My 7 year old grandson is sticking with me for now. He likes to pull the garden tractors in third gear. Maybe some day he'll want to slow down to first gear on the antique. As for that guy that couldn't imagine going to a pull in a snowstorm, I say and you can quote me " Last place in a tractor pull is better than being in the grandstand."

I've been pulling since 1999. My son was 3 at the time and really liked old tractors. Tractor pulling is just getting going good in Florida now. Never heard of them down much before that. My goal is to fix my Grandfathers Case VAC for my son to pull when he is ready. I can't convince my 13 year old daughter to pull. She likes to drive them around the yard but she says not in front of a crowd. I got my dad hooked and now we have three generations at the pulls and hope to have all compete at one. I've been around tractors all my life and actually raked hay with the VAC in 1976 and it was the first tractor I can remember riding on.

Started pulling 7-8 years ago, put the battery charger on our IH 400 that my Dad bought new in 1956 and got my butt kicked. (what else could you expect). Tried again a couple of years later and made the mistake of getting a 3rd place trophy, which turned out to be the most expensive trophy I've ever won. (My wife thinks that it would be alot cheaper to just buy them) I got throughly hooked, have helped get my Dad to pull his IH 200 and a 30 Massey a couple of times and have be lucky enough to have my 16 year old son pull with me the last 3-4 years. He has a IH super H that needs a MAJOR power increase (any good ideas out there???) that he has pulled a few times, but mainly pulls our 400. We been at a few pulls where we have been 3 generations pulling there together.I've even been a bad enough influence on a good friend and got him to start pulling. He won his first (and also most expensive) trophy this last summer and now is putting together another Allis puller. Now, if I could get my wife and 21 year old daughter to pull..... .....

Pop started in 52 or 53 with grandpa's 101 Jr. and then with his new Super H in 54. My first trophy reads Archie Mo.1967 4500# with that H.
My 11 year old nephew got a 1st and 2nd at the Mo. State fair with the H in 2002, so the old iron and the new generations of Mitchells are staying acquainted. When Dad started back in the early 50s at Pleasant Hill, Mo. they pulled a wooden runnered sled piled with concrete blocks and men, a set distance, like horses pull. There were two bottom and 3 bottom classes, all % of course. Over the past 50 years we have pulled Farmalls, Olivers, and Massey Harris's. Those are what we farmed with. Pop got a second at the State fair last summer in the 4000# class. There are 3 generations going strong now and I have a grand daughter coming along just fine ;-) .
