Yes your 60 will turn the 18.4 38s 6500 thru 8500, thats what i pull at every pull, and seen a lot of others doing it also. These were the two barrel carb. type, don't know about the single barrel carbs. Just pile the weights up front because it WILL come up.Ken.

I'm a gambler so I'm going to disagree with the previous posts. If it were mine and our club allowed 18.4's I'd bolt them on. The first gear thing - look first it's a STOCK JD, so yes you'll be in first. Second there is no substitute for a wider tire. Third, that 60, if just tuned up right it will spin 18.4's thru the 8500# class. I said tune up not massive engine overhaul. Clean it up, tune it up, give it a new set of points, or maybe a Pertronix, and adjust the valves. It really is amazing what a tune up will do.

The last thing - you haven't told us whether it is single barrel carb or a two barrel. HINT - TWO is better.

18.4x34 tires and the 15.5x38 tires are close to the same height so you should be able to turn them. The 18.4x38 are a lot taller and you might kill your 60 in the 8500.

Actuallly I just compared the difference in height and width of the 18.4x34's verses the 16.9x38's. They are within an inch of each other in both height and width, with the 16.9's being taller and the 18.4's wider. I prefer the 16.9x38's over the 18.4x34's. That's just my humble opinion.

My 18.4x38 Firestone Deep Treads are a bit taller than my 14.9x38s. Very stout and hard, but good looking. Perfect to cut or sharpen. I would like to sell because rules prohobit that size on my MM U in 5500. (Local club.) If you can use them, I would cut a good deal. That 60 would look real sharp with those 34" big sheet metal rims. I'd love to see that. You would not be sacraficing tire height by going with 34s even though 18.4x38s would be a bit taller.

Check with your local pulling clubs. A lot of them won't let 18.4 tires in except the plus classes.A stock 60 won't stand a chance in that class.

6500 yes. The heavier weights depend on the track, and chain length. In TN with our red clay tracks and short chains it will definately stall out. Been there, done that with a '52 A with a few modifications. 18.4 X 38 is a lot to turn over even with the creeper gear.
