Tuning for power

The best way to extract the extra horsepower that might be available is to get that thing on the dyno. Borrow one from a neighbor, or if you have to, rent the dealer's. Once on the dyno, adjust carb load screw (ask dealer mech. if you are unsure which) for maximum power, then set the ignition timing for maximum power. Repeat this procedure at least twice while the dyno has pulled the tractor down to rated PTO rpm. Attempt to evaluate governor action also while on the dyno.

This can be accomplished by a couple of different methods. The easiest method is to watch the PTO RPM needle while slowly applying dyno load to the engine. The needle should drop momentarily, then somewhat recover to the original RPM. This action will take place until the carb throttle has been moved to the wide open position by the governor. If you see NO signs of recovery while incrementally applying dyno load, then you should have the governor "worked over" for pulling and not just "rebuilt."
