I have a stock 880 that has old hard 15.5-38's on it. I'm wondering whether to put 16.9's or 18.4's on it? I plan on buying 16" rims so either one will work. My club allows 2 sizes over stock and we can't pull any higher than second gear. Some of the tracks we pull on are sort of hard but a lot of them are loose. I always spin out....only once did I do well (on a very hard clay track:6000lb-first place,7000lb-second place) Second gear isn't very fast and I'm thinking the 18.4's will speed it up and have a much larger footprint. Also, should I really hunt for used tires or just go with new ones.

i would personally stay with a 15-5 or 16-9 i would not go to a 18-4 on a 16 inch rim the 18-4 on a 16 inch rim would not allow you to get your whole tire on the ground! you want all you can get! if you are going to go to 18-4's i would have those 16 inch rims widened ! when you spin out you want your rut to be flat accross the bottom not cupped! i run 15-5's on 16 inch rims on my 77!

I would go with the 18.4's we run 18.4's on our 77 and pull 4500-7500 (not stock) but that 880 should have more than enough power to them. I would try to find a set of Firestone Deep Tread's with about a 1/2 inch of tread to put on it. We also have a set of 15.5's that are about two or three years old (their not very hard) but they word pretty decent on soft tracks. Will your rules allow you to turn the rpm's up?

The one's I have seen have done real good with 16.9's on 16" rims. If I went to 18.4's I'd put them on 18" rims if allowed.

Like another man said 'If you ain't got the power, why get a bigger tire?'

My vote - 16.9's

Tony

15.5x38 were the largest tires in 38" rims but larger tires were used. A 15-34 (18.4x34) tire was also available. Two sizes over stock would be 23.1x34" tires for some real big tires. Also avilable were 15-30 (18.4x30) which would give 23.1x30 for one size over stock. I don't know if you can really use anything this big but I can almost guarentee that you will get the rules changed for next year! ;-)

The old harder tires are worth looking for. The front edge of the lug is less likely to roll over and lose traction on a hard ttight track. For the same reason you want a tire with about 1/2 lug or a little less. It makes it less likely that the whole lug will fold/roll over and lose traction.

Have fun!
A.P.
