I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT THE CHEVY 454 ENGINE IS GREAT. MY GRANDPA HAS A 87 1 TON DUALLY 4X4. MY DAD HAS A 1 TON DUALLY CUMMINS 4X4. WE HOOKED THE CHEVY AND CUMMINS, THE CUMMINS CAME OUT ON TOP.

My 1972 Longhorn had a 375hp 402, weighed 4600lb with none of its 80 gallons of gas, had 4500lb payload, and a factory 9' bed for a slide in camper. It got 9.5mpg empty and 9mpg with 10,000 lb of trailer and small dozer behind. The motor is now in a 69 Chevelle and is a rocket. Wish I still had the beast but it needed 92 octane and that cost too much.

Try a powerstroke pull gooseneck with 13000 on board with out a problem

My brother inlaw has a 1 ton Dodge and pulls a 32' goose neck all over the US, its a 2001 and its got 265,000 miles on it and still uses no oil. When it comes to pulling your tractor around you cant beat the cummins on fuel economics period. He got pulled backwards by a 3/4 ton Chevy but lets hook a gooseneck to it and see who stops for fuel first!

Hooking two trucks together isn't a good real world comparison. Generally the heavier truck will always win. If they're the same weight with equal traction, generally they sit and spin. The reason the Cummins won that is probably because of the extra weight of the engine. I don't mean that as anything against either truck, I think they're both great.

I also agree however it is just a rival between me and my brother. I only get 7 mpg not pulling anything. His truck is 20x more fuel efficient but i can always say i pulled his truck backwards.

Sibling rivalry is great isn't it? I am partial to my Ford 390. Crank them up and still get 15 mpg. Some say it can outperform some gas guzzling 460s. I am more of a Chevy fan actually, but the rattle of a nice Cummins tops about any sound I've heard coming from a pickup truck. 300 6 cyl. Ford can crank some torque too if you wanna spend a little. Hard to kill one. Inline six cylinder will always score big on the torque contest for it's smaller size.

i agree the cummins is a good motor its a shame they never put a truck around them, we haul heavy loads on gooseneck trler, fmc trackloader, 40000 lb 450 g widetrack deere dozer with winch 23000 lb last week i hauled 9100 feet of cants, i would love to have a cummins up front, been there done that, ive had 3 dodges spent more time puttin brakes on them than hauling, i dont get no mileage out of my 97 ps but when you put your foot on the brake it will stop

Sounds like you got the Ford doing all it will do. I have owned both the Powerstroke and the Cummins and for pulling I had rather have the Dodge . As for stopping sounds like you might ought to check into a better set of trailer brakes cause their supposed to do most of the heavy work anyway. Then again, if your hauling 45000 you need a tractor-trailer to be safe no matter what brand is up front.

Amen brother. Yes it would be nice to have that motor in a Chevy or Ford. The Dodges seem to have lots of oddball problems with brakes, tranny, electrical, etc. Cummins is the best thing they got goin exept maybe for that new 345hp Hemi magnum. Ford is always heavy duty and good brakes. Chevrolet always has some great stuff in their trucks big and small. Classy vehicles. Dodge just seems to cheap out on some stuff. Like the giant plastic front end that falls apart when hit and expensive to fix. I love my F-250 Camper Special. It's an Iron beast.

Ford made camper specials too?? I have a '76 Chevy 3/4 ton camper special...also an iron beast!! I just assumed camper speical was a GM thing.

Oh no. I have a 1973 F-250. They made them in 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton. Beasts! 1973 had the 300, 360, and 390. 460 came later. Both companies made them. What engine in yours? I have a Dana 60 axle I think with a New Process 4 speed manual. The 1 tons I see have 70,80,90 axles. Huge brakes too as well as radiators. Made to use.

It's got a 350 engine...not anything special I guess but I suppose a popular engine, 3speed auto tranny TH-350 I guess, the rear end is a beast though, 4:10 or 4:11, 14 bolt, I don't know much more about it other than that! If you know more about it please share! Darren

You can get a 350 to do anything you want. I don't know what GM offered in their trucks, exept it was heavy duty like the Ford. My camper special is going to be used for hauling tractors after some minor work. I know some of the GM ones had a 396 I think as well as a 292 6 cyl. The 14 bolt is a great axle according to hearsay.

I think my truck could have came with either the 6 cyl that you mentioned, the 350, a 400 and a 454...stand to be corrected ofcourse.
