Greetings all of you master pullers! I am kind of new to the sport. I have a 1979 JD 4440 I'd like to pull. What are some of the secret tune ups I need to do to it. It is an 8-speed powershift. Right now there is solution in the right rear tire but not the left. It has 20.8-R38's. I think the fuel has been turned up a bit. But I'm not exactly sure. Can I tell easily? I didn't want to screw nothing up on it so I haven't played with it! I know it's putting out more than the rated 130 h.p. It has no weights on it at all. Do I need many? Well, any help you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated. - Dan

We pull a 4440 in the 13,000, 15000, and 17000lb classes. Get all the fluid out of your tires and run your air down to around 15psi, and if your only going to pull the 13000 and 15000, then you can get by on about 12-13 PSI if your runnin radials. Your tractor without fluid and a full tank of fuel and driver should weigh in at around 13,000lbs. To pull, yank your drawbar out and flip it over to it's in the high position and slide it in as far as you can get it. For the 13,000lbs class, you'll want around 3 weights on front if you've got any weight to work with. We run 10 on front for the 15,000 and 16 on fornt for the 17,000 with the remainder going on a 3 point bar. As for the powershift, I'd recommend not shifting going down the track, as those 8 speeds are a jerky shift under a heavy load. I'd say 4th or 5th gear would be a good starting point. As far as the pu mp is concerned, if it smokes when you get on the throttle in road gear, it's turned up some. If it's turned up alot, when the tach reaches 1600 RPM, it'll jump to rated speed in a quick manner. E-mail me with any questions you've got. Some pullin pix of our 4440 are on the link. We've given our 4440 over 2 rounds on the pump and had real good luck kickin red tractors asses.
