I just got done building up my 37 JD A and was wondering what is the pros and cons of a hotter-after market- mag.
Your help would be helpful

yah, hey if your going to use aftermarket mags, send me the originals for free. If you can't make an original hot enough you just need to send them to me for free..... ..... ..... .duh

JDPuller you didn't say what class or Div. you were trying for MSD boxes are illegal in some Div. I think they are allowed in Div.IV and V and you got to have your act together in these Divisions. If you get a mag. and have someone to massge it where it only fires twice instead of four times I think you will like it allot simpler,I got a MSD on my "G" you got to fuse pretty good or you will scew it up,and alot of wires to contend with,brother it will put the fire in the hole. another opinion Gman

This must be a retrotech board. Only antique pullers would run to a Magneto when MODERN DAY electronic ignition is available. The gain is twofold: more sparks, less power to drive the system. As far as too many wires: how many wires do you have on your trailer? MSD: try it, you'll like it.

I can't answer your question directy but I looked into going to a mag. When I questioned Bob at Robert's carb, he didn't feel that the benefits of a hot mag could justify the cost of buying one outright. Now he and I were comparing a hot mag versus a distributor upgraded with an electronic ignition and not a stock distributor.

You can form your own conclusion from what he felt.

I have heard several people say that they gained horsepower by going from a mag to a distributor. They felt it was because of the mechanical advance you get with the dist.

You hit it rite on the head. I've seen mags that would put out just as much spark as an elec. ing. But a mag doesn't have as much advance as a dist. That's where the Hp. diff. comes from. Glenn

I currently run one and have no problems. Plus you don't have to worry about MSD, etc. There are several people around here that opt for the mags. THose mags = hot enough spark, less wires, less problems, less worry
