I have a 37 JD-A, block will clean up at 045, I also have a set of 045 pistons for a 39 JD-A. question---- I have a set of 045 cast iron pistons out of a 60 JD, using yard stick measurments, using the stock crank 6-1/2 stroke and the 60 pistons, the top ring won't come past the step in the block, but will the larger bore above the step cause any problems with the longer head pistons? Would it be better to use the 39 pistons and a later crank with the 6-3/4 stroke? I don't intend to build a puller, just want to add a few more hp. thanks for any info.

I put the 6.75 stroke crank in my 36 A with High compression pistons. The only problem was the bottom oil ring came to far back into the block. Almost popped out of the cylinder. The crankshaft has a different end design on the flywheel end. It will work but there won't be enough room to put the big nut on it like the late A has.Maybe this helps a little, ken.

There will be no problems using the cast 60 gas pistons. As a matter of fact I would install them with a 6 3/4" stroke crank out of a 41-46 model. That would give you a significant hp increase over what you currently have. I have a 36 A that happens to have this setup. The pin diameter of the 39 and unstyled piston is smaller than that of the 60 piston. What I do is take a small brake hone, ream out the brass bushing in the rod until the 60, late A pin will fit (It won't take much). You will also have a much smoother running tractor vs all that snap crackle pop sound of the low compression flat head JD engines.

If the A pistons are Alum. I would use them. Be carefull about increasing the stroke. It maybe necessary to remove material that seperates the engine and transmsion and adding a metal plate if the crank is obstructed at the back of the stroke. It is possible to buy alum. pistons that are about 1 inch longer and they will increase the compression or its possible to have metal rings made that can be retained in the cylinder with set screws just behind the head to bump up the compression. Nothing gets more power than increasing the stroke but it can get very expensive. A strong motor is important in pulling but tires, Draw bar and weight distribution is also important.
