I can go along with the 120 octane rating for ethanol. One caveat: Don't be fooled into thinking that more octane equals more power. Ethanol has only about 66% as much energy per gallon when compared to gasoline. Your engine might not knock with E-85, but you won't be making nearly as much power either - unless you burn considerably more fuel.

I don't know the octane rating but it runs great in high comp engines. I blend it with regular and it takes care of pre-ignition and dieseling.

The only problem with etanol, is deposits it will leave in a carb. I'm involved with the alternative fuel program at Middle Tenn. St. and we have a 76' corvette that we have run on ethanol for 5 yrs. We have to rebuild the carb. twice a year. It also has 10-15% less btu's than methanol. it will hold the same amount of cop. as methanol. Other than that it requires basically the same carb. mods as methanol, and runs great. Oh yeh, your tractor will also smell like a 3 day drunk!

Yes, 10% to 15% less than methanol. But tell him how much less ethanol has than gasoline. That's where it really shows of how much more you need to burn to develop the same power. I show ethanol as having 76,000 mbtu/gal and gasoline having approximately 115,000 mbtu/gal. That calculates out to show ethanol as having more than 33% less energy than gasoline.

By the way, diesel has over 128,000 mbtu/gal. Sure would be nice if there was a better way to burn that in a gasoline engine.
