Hey guys:

Went to the last tractor pull of the season tonight and got educated. The Massey 1130's are just TOO MUCH. My tractor is a 1967 4020 diesel with the syncro range, roll-bar/canopy, and newly installed rollomatic. It still weighed in at 9000#. In the 9500# class I pulled 133' and in the 10500# class I pulled 167'. I just can't seem to get enough power while running with the turboed tractors. Agenda for net year is to get some suitcase weights, brackets, and a good adjustable hitch. What else is done for good power?

You can do like some of the guys have done in our area with their 4010's. They have put a turbo on and put the tractor on a diet, they took off the 3 point hitch and lift arms along with the hydraulics. The tractor with a narrow front weighes in at about 6700#. But this is all the tractor is used for is pulling, and it takes its fair share of 1st places.

I have a cousin that has a 4010 down to 6100, and still can take the starter off, and get a smaller radiator, and then, get a strait front end(non rollomatic). Put a 4620 cam in it, 4320 manifold, and then have the injectors (pencil ones seem to be better) worked on, along with the fuel pump. If you really want to, get bigger pistons, and stroke it, take the head off, flow it, and all that stuff.

I have heard theat the 4240 cam is better than the 4620? also a manifold off a 4240, 0r 4430 wouldbe better tnah any of the 20 series ones. is this correct?

I don't know for sure about the cam, but I don't think the manifolds are much different in the 4320 since it's facory with a turbo. I guess a 4430 is a good one too.

The 4430-40 intake enters in the center , whereas the 4320 and 4240 enters more towards the front , I think that's a little advantage . I have the 44 intake on my 4020 with the M&W turbo setup , it does away with a lot of bends on the intake plumbing which I always thought the less bends the better the flow . I also have a 40 series turbo cam , 3LD-279 turbo and a .370 head in the pump . It'll put out 200-220hp with that setup , used to run pretty good 10yrs ago but today we're way out of the game . I still pull the old 4020 a few times a season though , will probably do it till I die , I just like pulling Deeres no matter where I place , it's just for fun anyway . Jim

If the tractor is only going to be used for pulling I would put a 466 turboed motor in it out of dozer more power than a ag. motor.Then have the pump set for 350 horse and decent turbo after this you should be able to run 7th gear in the 9500.

first, get the pump worked over... turn the "smoke screw" up. Next work on getting more air into the motor... if you have a oil air cleaner, get rid of it... possibly get a air manifold off a 4430, or 4240. That should get you a little more power withour costing a lot of $$$$$. If that is not enough for you then work on the head... That is the real limiting factor on the 4020... but I leave that as your last resort, b/c of how much money you could sink into it. For weight brackets, I suggest a belly bracket that bolts under the motor to the frame rails. Use the hole that is closest to the rear of the tractor. good luck...

i think if you get a turbo and manifold off of a 4240 or 4440 perhaps?..not to sure but helped a friend bolt one of these on his 4010 and made a world of diff in the way it pulled...if rules state that you have to run tractor as factory...ie non turbo as 4020's were, then you will have to spend some money getting bored and stroked..no substitute for that and running non turbo against turbo is a very big disadvantage from the get go. and as far as the smart remarks from others dont let it get to you..some people are nearsighted and if international hadnt made it easy for their pullers by making the 466 truck motors so easy to bolt into the tractors as they did... they wouldnt enjoy the following that they do now in the pulling circuits..to bad they didnt have as much of a following in the farming world which is what tractors were designed for..perhaps international would still be a competitor..and lets look at what the 4010 and 4020 sell for compared to same hp int..cant beat that with a stick

Better get a RED one TURN IT UP and then you will have somthing ,O NOW STOP befor you ALL get on your HIGH horses LOOK at the nationals and see who,s winning.

Thanks guys. So if I install a squared manifold like off of a late model 4020 or a 4230, that will help some with the air? I also saw this thing in the Shoup manufacturing catalog which was called a turbo II and it took the place of the pre-cleaner but swirled the air like in the pattern of a tornado or something, any experience with these? My three point hitch is already off. I was wondering weather to put the weight bracket under the belly or on the three point hitch mount, looks like my answers were answered :) Now, as for the fuel. My pump was rebuilt and it has a 115 horsepower leaf spring in it and has an adjustment on it. I had the screw 3/4 of the way out and it still didn't smoke nearly as much as I expected, very little at 1000RPM warming up and some under load. Shouldn't that be enough fuel? Keep the great ideas coming, also I'm pulling in the farm stock class. Thanks a million.

As far as watching the nationals! If you indeed watch them, it is the GREEN ones, and I mean John Deere's that usually rule the Pro-Stock category. And they don't do to bad in the Super-Stock class either.

I don't want to listen to your smart remarks. I bought a deere because i wanted a deere to pull with. I saw no IH's yesterday but rather john deeres and massey's. So if anyone can help me out with comments/suggestions i'd greatly appreciate it. Any other smart remarks I don't want to hear.
