Radial tires

I'm really starting to hear a lot about how great these Firestone radial 23s are, and I've seen some mighty strong tractors wearing a set. Are they really that good from one track to the next? I've also heard that they're not legal with some clubs. Got almost new F&Rs and having trouble putting the HP on the ground, but I'd hate like the dickens to get a set and then have them outlawed. [ Been in a little tire hot water before.] What do yall think? Are they a lot better, and should they be legal in antique classes?

Farmallflogger,
you can get the supertrac 23deg in an 8ply bias tire. That is what came new on Father-in-laws JD 6400. Great farm tires. They are the same tread design as the radial, and look like pretty good tires, stand up taller than field and Roads, and have a flatter profile. The are definately cheaper than the radials, but more expensive than field and roads. Go to the firestone web sight, and check out the ratings. I'm like you I'd like to have a set, but I just don't know if I want to take the 800 dollar gamble. Good Luck, Greg H.

Many clubs ban radials to reduce the chances of wheelies and overturns due to the extra traction. Also fewer broken parts as the bias ply tires spin easier.

John, I have talk with several pullers in the Ohio area and they stated that the radials will not do the job on the track. I have used them on my field tractors and have been pleased with the results. Soft ground does not compare to tracks that we pull on....

Redhoss if the radials aren't any good why do most clubs outlaw them,in our pulling area I beleive you could sneak a set of cut tires easier thaan a set of radials so they must be pretty good just an observation Gman

I did not say the radials were not any good. The two individuals that I talked with in Ohio strongly recommended that my $ would be better spent with other tires. Some of their pullers had tried them without much success. I would rather for someone else to experiment with them before I would try any...

I pull in Maine and Canada and there is no question that Radials (Cut) will pull better than bias. It is probably the best money you could spend for pulling. I have never seen an accident caused by tires. The only thing I would say is they don't really start to work until your tractor weighs over ten 10,000lbs. I pulled my 560 against a freind who had a 450 the other night and I beat him in the 6,000 and the 8,000. But he killed me in the 10,000. He had radials and I had bias. We pull up to 22,500 and the radials absolutly dominate from 14,000-22,500. One other observation is that when there is a great deal of wheel speed the tires start to bounce. If you pull a stock tractor like a 1466 in high 1 it will start to bounce that is with about 3,000 rpm's. Any faster ground speed and it will look like a basketball going down the track.

I'll second that comment. Radials on my 6000 hot farm Case are the worst choice I could have made. They bounce really bad when the tire speed is up. I have had them out perform bias ply tires on certain tracks, but overall I have had more bad times than good with them.

Several people around here have tried radials...not just the Firestone 23 degrees, but any other brand that could be had. Every one of them have gone back to bias ply tires because the radials didn't hook as good.
