Mark, nearly any tractor can be a good pulling tractor. Some do better in certain divisions and weight classes than others, for a variety of reasons. What it usually boils down to, though, is the guy in the seat. 90% of the time, the guy with the best track-reading, set-up and driving skills will take home the trophy. That's why you see 40 hp stock tractors beat 100 hp hot-rods from time to time. It isn't all about what's under the hood or what color paint is on that hood.

I agree with the G-Man pretty much. But with a 100
horse power you cold pull in second witch takes a
lil less skill I think. We hav an M with 281 cubic
inches(i kno not realy a whole lot) in 1 gear you
realy hav to use those breaks and throttle down,
but in 2 you hold the throttle back and ride it
till it dies(not realy good on the motor). We hav
2 m's that r always 1 and 2. One of them is stock
an the other is a 450 motor. Besides tactic G-man
good tires wouldn't hurt. If you think some of my
thoughts are wrong o well I'm only 14 and hav been
pullin 2 years. I LUV IT!!

Actually, I pulled my first tractor 10 years ago. I pulled it for a couple years and then we began pulling four wheel drive pickups. I suggest you worry about something you know about, rather than making things up. And regardless of my experience, at least I have the guts to back up my opinions with an email address. Now go run and play, little boy.

I don't think you're wrong at all. In fact, you brought up some good points that I failed to mention. Good tires are definitely important. Your comments about the bigger tractors pulling in higher gears is also correct. I guess the direction I was leaning was more toward the stock-type low-gear classes. Obviously a 40hp stocker isn't going to stand much of a chance in Division 5, but on the right track in low gear it may be able to put more horsepower to the ground than the 100 hp tractor - especially if the driver is one of those good ole boys that knows his tractor backwards and forwards. Good luck with your pulling. I wish I could have gotten started at 14. I'm 27 and I'm really not into pulling as much as I'd like to be, except for going to every pull I can and talking to as many pullers as I can. Maybe next year my "G" will be up and running. I'm sure I will be the one getting an education then - from the tractor and the other pullers.

Thanks for the complements but our second gear is
under our speed limit(4mph) but some places
antique speed limit is 3mph so you hav a good
point.I think i'm veryluky to be able to pull.And
even though its a john dere i wish u luck fixing
it .And not tryin to say your wrong cause we have
been beatin some tracors when we were in 1 gear.
Jus last weekend we beat a bored g and bored harr
parr (oliver) wich were both in 2 gear. (You know
their bored when then they pull 8600 in 2nd gear
and spin out). And i saw a b with that very slow
gear full pull(the only 1 in his class) so 1 is
better on those hard biteing classes. I'm not
sayin you were wrong cause slow is good for some
ppl(proved by the B) and i know you know what your
talking about.
