Hello Im fifteen years old .
My dad and I have a John Deere Model 720 Diesel standard and are going to pull it for the first time , how much weight should we have on it in the unlimited class ? It runs great , but we dont want to over load or hurt it with to too much weight Right now we have loaded tires and 2100 LBS of weights ,the tractor weights 8600 with me on it , ( I weigh 160 ) So I should weigh 10,700 the with the weight we have on it , Is this to much for the tractor ? Thanks very much Stephen G

There is a 720 standard diesel that pulls at our club. They pull it in the 10500 stock class. Only bolt on wheel weights. I has a real low 1st gear and 18.4 x 30 rubber. It has a shortened drawbar that is at 20" high. It does OK but I'm a Case guy.

I think you need a lot more weight, I saw a boy, weigh his in at 19000, and pulled, and then went and got some more weight, just about all was on the back, he did real good, that thing pulled great. My 2 cents worth. But he did get beat, after 4, pull offs.

You have got to be kidding, where im from John Deere 4020's power out in the 11,500 lbs no blower class, and those have had all the pump and injector work done.
So you are telling this kid, to weight his tractor up just to see if he can start the sled, there is know way that a STOCK 720 DIESEL can pull in a 19000 lb class, I want to see a picture of this, he had to be holding at least 1000 lbs of weights cause i know that you cant find that much space to hold at least 10000 lbs
Well thats just my thought take it for what its worth

I know what you mean, but around here most of the 4020 boys run 2,3,4th gears on transfer sleds, and sometimes they do power out. However when they are down in first gear, I've seen stock 4020's go up to 12,500 on transfer sled without powering out with 18.4x38s. Come to think of it, i've never seen a 4020 power out in First. First gear in your 4020 is probobly only 1/4 to 1/2 mile per hour faster than the 720-730 first gear that everyone refers to as the creeper gear. It is funny to notice how people find different ways of pulling around the country. Just what I've seen around WV and Ohio, but I know that doesn't mean much. Later on Greg H.

FYI - I would have to disagree with all of you.
On Aug 2, I went to a king of the mountain pull..
For those of you unfamiliar..it is basically weight your tractor with all the weights you can and pull a stone boat ( dead weight)....I watched a 2 JD 720's over 24000 lbs pull and end up 1st and 2nd....I have pictures....email me
cannon4@svol.net and I will attach a copy to email
It was amazing....and it was my husband!!!
I am not B.S.ing....you just have to be real careful when your moving them....

I can back Stacy up on that as nearly 7,000 lbs of that weight on that 720 JD was mine. It was like putting a puzzle together getting all those suitcase and wheel weights on that tractor. With steal, cutting torch, and welder you can make a lot of heavy brackets.

Everybody should really say when there talking about dead weight pulls, cause i know nothing about them, never even seen one, then i say something and somebody proves me wrong, then i guess i learn something

Here in Texas all the pulls used to be weighted or non-weighted, which means that everyone put as much weight on the tractors as they could. About 2 years ago one of the Texas pulls was featured in the Hook showing some of the tractors weighted up, also in the Green Mag was an article about one of the tractors/owner and JD80 named Monster Popper that pulled in the unlimited weighted class, this tractor weighs over the 24,000lbs mark.. and has been reported of being heavier. I have seen a 720 that was close to this last year, and will probably see it again in a few weeks at a pull. With the low ceaper gear in the 720/730's and some engine/fuel work it is possible. I will say that most of the tracks down here are not as good as the tracks in the Midwest and East. I would like to see some of the tractors pull on the better tracks... Most of this type of pulling is going to the waste side, as it takes an 18wheeler to haul the tractors, and you usually get one pull. The weight class pulls give everyone one a more equal playing field without coughing up everything they have for a tractor.. (but then some do that anyways.) JDGnut

Where do you plan on pulling the 720?

This pull just took place at Portersville, Pa. Aug. 3rd. It is called King Of The Mountain. It should be held there again on Aug. 2nd next year. There was 3 John Deeres on top. 2 - 720s and a 620 at near 20,000 some lbs. 1st place John Deere 720 2nd place John Deere 720 3rd place John Deere 620

I was there too, The 620 didn't make it. Farmall 450 was 3rd and a Super MTA 4th.

The King of the mountian pull I saw at Portersville pa, did indeed have 3 john deere's in the final round, The 620 broke an axle hub, and weighed the lightest. The winner was a 720 LP tricycle. I heard it was at 24,000lbs.

Depends on where the weight is being put. Short wheelbase(standard) will put more weight on front.
If the weights are hung on the front, makes balance worse, tractor spins out easy. All the add on weight on the back, however, is a different story. 10,700 is not to heavy for the tractor though, have seen considerably more. Have fun!
