Which is best for us pullers to run out of power,or traction. I think traction, because it tell you that you can run different tires and you have a good tractor.

I don't choke my M very often, but if it chokes with the front wheels about 6 inches off the track I know that the balance was good and every ounce of hp got to the track. I've got in the money more times with a dead engine than I have spinning out. HA HA, it's all for fun. No brand war intended, but every brand and every tractor will lug differently, you must determine, for your own good, what works best for you.

I pull a JD B in the stock 4000 lb class and i always run out of power before i run out of traction i would love to have enough power to spin out once ;)

I try to balance to run out of traction before running out of power. You can adjust power with brakes and throttle. I pull stock and classic 4000-6000# with a 961 Ford, moma pulls 3500-5000# with a Cockshutt 30. Both of these tractors are proven winners in Ar, Mo, Ok,& Ms. The trick is balance!

i say power because that tells you that you have one of the most important things down; balance, yes if you are running out of power way behind everyone you have a problem but i say traction is more important than power, to prove my point i know of some plain old off the farm Farmall M's that will run over much bigger stuff because they know how to weight them down.

I agree with everybody accept bill. Horse power is not everything. I pull a Massey Harris 30 with 31 HP and I beat Allis WD's that have 43 HP. I also have a John Deere A that my front end gets up about 1 inch and stays and it spins both tires at the same time without brakes and it is starting to reall pull. I get 1st place every time. It all depends. If you are usually finishing out ahead of everyone then stalling out is ok. Under those conditions doing both at the same time should still get you farther.

If you are finishing in the middle or back of the pack then stalling out or loosing both at the same time isn't helping you do better. Drop down a gear. You will wind up with a little more speed at the same point on the track which at least has the chance of getting you farther.

Think of it this way. If you are stalling out add more power. If you are spinning out easily add traction (tires, weight distribution, hitch, etc.).

Both at the same time is best. You'll not know exactly which one you will lose first, though, if you are balanced for both. Every track is a little different, and you can't predict exactly which you will lose first.

Usually I error in the side of power - I lose traction first.

traction is always the best to run out of cause you can go alot farther than if you run out of power. cause if you have a tractor that has say 40 hp and it has same tires and everthing it is only gonna make it say 175 feet. and a tractor with 70 hp is gonna make it 275 cause it is gonna have enough power to get the job done.

YOU WANT TO RUN OUT OF TRACTION BEFORE YOU RUN OUT OF POWER. TRACTION IS A LOT CHEAP TO CORRECT THAN HORSEPOWER. IF YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH HORSEPOWER IT WILL COST YOU MONEY TO GAIN IT. IF YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TRACTION YOU CAN ADJUST YOUR AIR PRESSURE AT NO CHARGE. EVEN IF YOU NEED DIFFERENT TIRES THEY ARE ALOT CHEAPER THAN BUYING HORSEPOWER.
