On a tractor with enough horsepower to pull from 5000 pounds to 8500 pounds, what does experience show? Is a wide tire like 18.4 x 38 better or worse than a 14.9 x 38 or 15.5 x 38? Is a 16.9 x 38 a good compromise?

I would also like your thoughts on width of tires for clay tracks. Thank you.

Are you dead weight or weight transfer pulling? Speed limit, low gear?

I used to pull a lot of blacktop weight transfer before I moved here. If it was open gear with a speed limit, I ran 15.5's so I could run 3rd or 4th gear. Low gear, I ran 14.9s, because they were taller. Didn't see many 18.4's, but a lot of the pulls were max size of 15.5.

The guys that pulled antiques usually ran the 14.9s. Don't know if it helps or not.

I want to compare tires while pulling a weight transfer eliminator on blacktop. Sometimes a 3 to 4 mph speed limit. Sometimes no limit. Thanks.

In Albion Pa. we pull on concrete and our classes start at 5,000 and jump 2,500 between clases, so I can tell you that 5,000, 7,500, use 13X38 through 15X38 S , and 10,000 up through 15,000 use 16X38 to 18X38 S and verry road worn and put on backwords. Pulling derby on dirt is a difernt horse of it's own. I do not pull on dirt, but have watched them and it looks to be harder on the tractor in the end as you try to start the boat at full RPM's as on concrete you use only what RPM's you need to keep fron stalling out. Still 20 ft. for full pull.
