I need Ford tractor experts help! I am restoring a early 1942 Ford GPW script military jeep. I have been told that they used the same grey color that Ford was using on its tractor engines at the time, May/June 1942. They had produced a GP jeep in 1941 that had a Ford tractor engine in it. When they changed over to the Government Standard engine, wich was designed by Willys, but cast and built by Ford for the GPW, they kept painting them the same Ford Grey color. The jeep restoration guys can't seem to figure out just what this grey color was. Would any of you folks have the correct paint name and description of the grey that was used on Ford tractor engines at that time? I am in a Vietnam Vets group, and we take the old jeep to parades and car shows, so I would like to get as close as possible to the right color. Thankyou in advance.

With kind regards, Dave Neale, Caledonia NY

The best grey I've found for the Ford grey I found at Ace Hardware. It was called Pewter Grey. It was in spray cans. It was a commonly stocked item. I do not believe that it was Rustoleum Brand, but another stocked at Ace.

I have had about 20 jeeps, civial and military, but all "flat fenders, " up to early 50s. I have restored Willys, and owned a well restored Ford GPW (Goverment 80" Wheelbase - General Purpose Incorrect). I have been restoring a 1941 Ford GP. This is the one that Mr. Ford did no get the contract with. It followed the Ford Pigmy (jeep). They made 4,000, something of these jeeps. Then Willys got the government contract and Ford was out. However, Ford was choosen by the government as a second contractor to the Willys design. Therefore, Ford stamped its Script F into most of the parts on its jeep to differentiate them if there were failure in combat. You are right, Ford kept painting their engines (actually Willys Go Devil Engines made by Ford) grey. Every Ford jeep owner is proud of this grey engine.

My GP and early production GPW's each had Ford's name in script across the back panel (no gas can holder like production jeeps).
