I want to paint my Oliver 1755 this winter. The tractor gets used hard and sometimes sits out. Its it worth all the extra money for automotive type paint? The Valu Bilt stuff is about $30 a gallon pluw $12 for hardner. I know you get what you pay for, but do you think that paint would do a good job for a tractor that will never see a show or parade? I havent painted any cars in a couple years but the best I can remember cheap auto paint was about $100 a gallon. Is this still about right?
Thanks
Mike

I used to use PPG & Ditzler but can't afford them on tractors. Check out AMERICAN COATINGS online @ www.americancoatings.com or 281-351-1776. It is the highest quality primers & paint at very good price. They have what you want in stock for the Oliver in a Rustlock primer & paint. I just received my paint for a 51' VAC with thinner for $42 bucks. The epoxy primer (RL1464) was $61.00. This is the best paint I've used.

a $100 / gal is about right. In PPG's OMNI line the single stage ureathan runs about this in most places. Here is a link to Rod(NH)'s web site that lists Ag colors. Buy a small amount first and see what really matches. I don't know which oliver green you want, there is five listed. Someone on the oliver section maybe able to help you more. If you find a good match please let us know.

okay I'll bite

here is my thoughts, please remember this only an opinion

tractors that are worked are going to be harder on paint than ones that sit in from the weather. One gas spill can really ruin a "value" paint job. A $100/gal for a 1 gal paint job is cheap. By saving $60 or so you'll have nearly all the work and effort for something that will fade sooner, scratch easier and blister when fuel is spilled. Why bother painting it in the first place. There is nothing wrong with honest rust.

Okay I'll get off the soap box. Can you get the correct color in valu bilt? Not what they say matches but what really does. In Allis, the persian orange doesn't match, PPG has a nice match. I think you'd use more than one gal of paint for your oliver so my numbers will be off but I hope others will understand the point I'm trying to make.

I agree...buy the better paint. I am not too familiar with Valu Bilt paint, but I'll bet their representatives are not as well-versed in color theory as their PPG counterparts. As a long-time PPG distributor employee I can assure you that a good PPG jobber will not only give you a better color match (more important to overall tractor value than you might think), the longevity of the job will be far-superior. Depending upon where you live, find a city with population in excess of 150,000 to locate a PPG distributor that employs someone trained in color theory. Become this person's friend...chances are your tractor will put your neighbor's to shame regardless if their cousin is a painter....afterall, who do you think schooled your neighbor's painter?

Thanks for your opinion. I pretty much knew the answer, but I was hoping someone could give me a justification for not spending money on good paint. Anybody use Nason by Dupont? I used that a few years ago for painting a truck and it worked well, but I havent painted for a few years so I am out of the loop. Whats good now? Also, anyone have paint codes for Meadow green and Clover white?

I have only used PPG Omni, but consider the economy lines of PPG/DuPont/Sherwin Williams(Martin Senour) equivalent, far better than Alkyd enamel. The link to Rod(NH)'s paint codes is above in this thread -- I'm not familiar with Olivers colors, I believe there is an Oliver forum on tis site -- those people should know the codes.
