I didn't answer because I don't use spray cans, except for an occasional small part. I will agree with Butch in that you should use epoxy primer over your surfacer, but to act as a sealer, as the spray can stuff "could" lift the topcoat, the epoxy should prevent that. I would sand the last coat before using the epoxy. I like to use the same brand of everything. Don't know if you can get it too smooth as Butch says, but you probably don't need to sand surfacer any finer than 400 grit. I have no hesitation at all to use topcoat over surfacer, but again, only if it is made by the same manufacturer.

In case CNKS is gone for a spell I'll throw in my 2 cents worth. Idealy you would have sprayed a coat of E-primer before the surfacer. When using a single part surfacer (your spray bomb primer) I always put a coat of epoxy primer over the surfacer before topcoating. I belive CN uses the 2 part surfacers and topcoats over it but they are a different animal. Too smooth a surface is not ideal for paint adheasion and I would sand that last coat with 180 in a DA or 400 by hand before the next coat whatever it ends up being. By the way your OMNI MTK is a urethane, MAE is enamel.

Thanks guys for your help I really appreciate it. Under normal conditions I would have sprayed the primer on sheet metal but I was forced to spray it like I said (spray cans). I will sand the last coat of primer I have already put on with 400 and spray a coat of E-primer from PPG when I am ready to put on topcoat. How much time do I have after spraying E-primer before topcoating?

48 hours for MP170, then you have to scuff and reapply.
