Etching primer vs epoxy primer

Could someone please tell me the best primer to use before painting. Some guys say etching primer and others say epoxy primer. I will be sandblasitng the body of the tractor I am restoring . I have experience using the etching primer, but I dont think it sticks very well. I painted a tractor last year with it and the paint and primer is flaking off the body of the tractor in one area.

I prefer a self etching primer, scuff pad, then primer surfacer until I am satisfied it is ready for paint, final sanding, then topcoat. This method works good if you work slow. Sandblast and etch prime this weekend. Scotch brite and primer surfacer next week. Partial paint of color and assembly. Final sanding and painting the next weekend. If you use epoxy I hope you are retired. Need to be able to go ahead and finish the job when you start. The self etch will keep it from rusting and give you a good base to work from. Many of them will let you put filler on top. Primer surfaces are easy to spray, easy to sand, and help you find and fix your problems before topcoating. NAPA sells an econo-body line of self etching primers that are reasonable.

Hi Tyson,

Some prefer etch and some prefer epoxy. DuPont has historically pushed the etch primer and PPG has historically pushed the epoxy. I much prefer the epoxy for reasons previously posted.

I always let the epoxy dry (to the touch) before topcoating. In fact PPG's high end epoxy, DPLF has a 60 minute minimum wait time (70 deg F) before topcoating (90 min if 2 epoxy coats are used). That's with the standard activator (catalyst). Plus if you are going to put any plastic filler on top of it (I sometimes do) it needs an overnight dry beforehand (again if 2 epoxy coats are used, which is typical for me). The DPLF can be topcoated up to 7 days after application without scuff sanding and reapplying. I am not saying other methods can't work. I just prefer to follow the explicit manufacturer's instructions.

Because of the high price for DPLF I have moved to PPG's economy line MP170 epoxy. The instructions are different. The initial dry is 30 min at 70F (1 coat) and the topcoat window is 3 days instead of 7.

DuPont's epoxy instructions are different still with a 30 min dry for 1 coat, a 16 hr dry under plastic filler and a maximum 24 hr window to topcoat w/o sanding. The 24 hr window is too tight for my liking. I will therefore be unlikely to ever use the DuPont product.

Whichever product you chose, etch or epoxy, be sure to obtain the manufacturer's technical data sheet (not just can label instructions) that details usage and compatibility for the particular product.

Hey Rod, I didnt know that DPLF was still availible, thanks. It is the best stuff in the world for the inside of battery boxes and my old quart is just about gone. Should I save up for a month before I go to get another? lol

Oh yes, the DPLF is still available. Here's the tech sheet in .pdf format. The LF stands for lead free. The older DP (leaded) is no longer available as far as I know. I have used the older DP on a bare steel Honda front cowling (2 coats) without a topcoat and left it outside in the weather continuously for about 10 years. Not a sign of any rust showing up. Pretty hard to beat that for a primer. An outstanding product. I assume the newer DPLF is as good but do not have enough experience with it to confirm. Seems the last time I compared costs with the OMNI MP170 about two years ago, the DPLF was between 2 and 3 times more expensive. I don't have any long term experience with MP170 either but it seems to be a very good product at a reasonable price as do the other items in the OMNI line. By the way, I think (not positive) that DP stands for Ditzler Primer. That goes back to the days when the PPG automotive refinish line carried the Ditzler brand name. Ditzler goes back to the days when they painted cars in black lacquer by brush at Henry's factory :o).

A slight clarification regarding the use of epoxy primer. You can topcoat within the time frame given on the label. If you want to topcoat immediately afterward, i.e. you have the topcoat gun loaded and ready to go as soon as you finish the epoxy, you must wait until the epoxy flashes or becomes tacky before spraying the topcoat. This is usually 10-15 minutes, depending on temperature. This is really no different than waiting the same 10-15 minutes between different applications of topcoat.

As Jerry said there is no single best primer for all situations but you won't be too wrong in using an epoxy primer over any clean surface if you want to use only one product. Some people seem to think the self etching primers are a cure all but as you found, they are not. The trick to a non-lifting paint job is to have each coat bonded to whatever is below it. The first coat of paint, be it over new metal, old metal, or old paint must be mechanicaly bonded meaning a scratched or rough surface that allows the coating to "tooth in" and adhere. This can be acomplished by blasting, sanding or wirebrushing or chemicaly via self etching primer depending on what kind of parts you are preparing. Aditional coats of primer ,sealer, filler or top coats need to be bonded to prior coats also. Most of the time this is acomplished by spraying additional coats in a time frame that allows a gluing(?) of the next coat to the prior one. This requires compatable materials and as mentioned, a proper time frame. This is why some of us on the board alway recomend a top to bottom job using materials from one source. Some materials just wont bond or worse, will lift prior coats. Anybody who remembers the old laquers and tried to apply them over a less than fully cured enamal got an education in lifting prior coatings. As Jerry said your best bond comes from spraying a compatable top coat over an Epoxy primer within a given time frame, this is listed on the data sheets for the primers. Jerry is not wrong in that spraying your top coat ASAP over the E prime will give you the absolute best bonding but you wil have no troubles as long as you stay within the time frames listed on the label, I think PPG's Omni line is around 24 hours. This is not to say you cannot achive a non lifting job using cheaper products like Rustolium. My point is that all products used must be compatable for them to bond together and in answering your question for "best" requires that I recomend an automive system using epoxy primers. Good luck.

If the self etching primer is peeling off the tractor that means you have a contaminated surface that prevented the primer from sticking. As it came loose, the paint of course came with it. If the self etching primer stayed in place and the urethane primer and the paint came loose, that means that the SE primers was not completely dry before the top coats were applied.

The orginal purpose of self-etching primer was to condition new metal in order to allow regular laquer primer to stick better. Many painters are no longer using the SE primers because of the excellent adhesion properties of the urethane and epoxy primers.

If you use SE primer then you need to wait several hours before spraying the primer and the top coats. If you spray too soon the acid in the SE primer has not evaporated and that will cause peeling later as the acids leaves and passes through them. My mentor told me to wait a few hours and then scratch the surface of the SE primer with a Scotch pad and let it set for several more hours in order to allow complete drying.

As far as top coating the SE primer, it is considered best to use a urethane primer first and then the paint. Rarely do you paint directly over the SE primer. I have done it, but only in areas that are not exposed directly to the elements.

When considering epoxy primers keep in mind that if the epoxy dries before the top coats are sprayed, then you are going to get peeling. Look at all the GM and Chrysler cars whose paint is literally falling off, especially the whites and the high metalic blues and grayes.

If you choose epoxy primer then everything must go smoothly with no loss of time. In other words the paint goes on before the epoxy even has a chance to dry. I have never used a drying retarder in E prime to prolong the wet time, but it might be an option.

Should the epoxy primer dry then you will have to sand in order to get good adhesion. But here is the trouble: E primer does not sand well. It gums up the paper quickly and leaves a rather rough, uneven surface behind, not the smooth textured surface that urethane primer has. Imagine trying to sand a warm candy bar and you have an idea of what it is like trying to sand E prime. E prime that is several years old sands much better, but fresh E prime is a tough go.

point out that epoxy primers and urethane primers are NOT the same thing. I guess I am as guilty as any using the two terms interchangably, but remember they are not the same thing.

Each has it's own unique characteristics and purpose. Epoxy is used for strictly adhesion properties before final painting. Epoxy is sprayed on and the paint is applied before drying and without sanding. Urethane is used as a primer or surfacer for working the metal into shape. It too can be painted over just prior to it's drying or can be allowed to dry completely and then sanded and painted.
