I painted my Farmall H yesterday. Now I am no novice to painting tractors, I painted a F-20, super A, and a 200 in the last two years as well as several Fords. Now here is my question, I used IH red oxide primer and IH 2150 on all three IH tractors, yet the lastest one (the H) is really orange colored compared to the other two (almost Case orange). Any ideas, did IH change the make up of there paint? I think that I had lead paint believe it or not when I painted the F-20, the can said caution contains lead. Must have been old dealer stock. I buy the paint when i am going to paint from the local dealer. Thanks for the help.

As Red Dave said, a lot of paints have lead in them, even PPG and DuPont. I think I read on the Farmall forum in the last month that premixed paint such as IH 2150 has to be stirred or shaken a lot--it may have been on the shelve a long time. That's one advantage of having your paint mixed, instead of buying premixed paint. Of course the person mixing can mess up too. I think the new 2150 is lead free, should have a batch number followed by "LF". Lead should not be a problem if you wear a twin cartridge mask while painting (supplied air system if you are using hardeners). I also wear a mask when wire brushing old paint.

It sounds like a mistake in the mixing of the pigments.
You may very well have had lead in your paint, and the paint doesn't have to be old stock for it to happen either.
Contrary to popular belief, lead is not banned from all paints. It is only banned from paint used in the interiors of residences and child-occupied facilities such as day-care's and schools. A paint may even have up to 1% lead content by weight and not have to list it on the label. The exact words used on the label are critical. Paint with some lead, but less than 1% lead by weight can be labeled "non-lead" paint.
If it doesn't say specificaly "lead-free" it may have lead.
Government regulations are complex and confusing. It's easy to be mislead by the labels if you don't know the terminology. It's crazy, but it's true.

IH has a light red # 50 used on later models, this is not close to Case Flambeau Red. Does the paint container have a manufacturer's code? Using this code the company can tell the date the paint was made, they should be able to tell you if they have problems with that batch of paint. There has to be a pigment mixing mistake.
