I just finished my first restoration (not I did not remove every single bolt and part since the Ford 8N ran well). In any event, I'm now restoring my father-in-law's A-C B. I used NAPA urethane enamel for the Ford since I heard it stood up to fuel spills better than acrylic. Any suggestions re urethane vs. acrylic. I was happy with the results but its only been a year. Also, anyone know the NAPA paint code for "persian orange#1"?? Thanks.

Hi Lou,

A urethane is always "better" than an acrylic enamel because it represents a more durable, chemical resistant finish, especially if a urethane type of hardener is not used in the acrylic enamel. There are health issues related to using urethanes though that require fresh air-supplied respiratory equipment. Do a search on this forum for "isocyanates" for previous discussions on this matter.

When I was planning painting for my AC-B last year, I investigated DuPont, PPG and Martin Senour (NAPA) brands. As I recall, in the Martin Senour line there were three different "persian oranges" listed for AC. The paint chips that they had at the NAPA store all looked about the same to me...all with too much red in them. This seems to agree with Lee's determination. The two DuPont numbers that I investigated led to some conflicting information as to which was the earlier shade of orange, referred to as persian #1 on this board and others. The DuPont chips that I saw did not match the numbers that were floating around regarding shade. I actually wound up buying a trial quart of each of the two different persian oranges listed by PPG to confirm the shade of persian #1, which is a pumpkin shade of orange. All AC-Bs were this early pumpkin shade of orange. See this post for a visual color comparison of the two PPG persian oranges. I settled on the 60080 as the best match. This is how the PPG 60080 looks on my B (sheet metal only at this time :o)).

PPG 60080 is available in PPG's OMNI line of paints in acrylic enamel (with and w/o hardener) as PPG OMNI MAE 60080, acrylic urethane as PPG OMNI MTK 60080 and as a two stage urethane basecoat/clearcoat as PPG OMNI MBC 60080. The MAE is about $50 per gallon, not including any hardener or reducer. The MTK is a little more, also not including hardener or reducer. I don't know about the MBC.

Good luck with your B.

The big Allis guys use PPG's Persian Orange #1. It seems to be the most authentic color, and it looks fantastic. However, be prepared to pay for it. The Allis oranges in my NAPA paint chip book aren't even close to correct.
