I bought a gallon of Caterpillar Yellow, Martin Senour paint, reducer, and hardener to refininsh my Mott (Alamo) 88" flail mower. I am going to use this coating to practice before I refinish my Farmall 504 Diesel. Is this a good brand? Is it a good coating? I paid $50 for the paint (gal), $15 for the reducer (qt), and $15 for the hardener (pt). These are approx, I do not have the invoice in front of me. The ratio is 4:1:1/2. I am excited because I have never used a three-part paint before. Also, I would hate to screw-up $80 a gallon applied coating. Any advice for a novice? I have used air and airless sprayers as well a convential methods of application. I just haven't used automotive paint before. Thanks.

Several weeks ago, i stopped at the local auto body shop, to ask about a catalog. I was in there 5 minutes, and had to get out asap., as the smell of the paint got me into an asthma-like attack! I barely made the 2 miles home to get my inhaler before i passed out! fortunately, i made it! So, don't ask if you need the protections of an air supply mask, etc., so you don't end up like me, and others of my era!

This is good info. I read the back of the containers and did not see (or skipped the safety info) any disclaimers or warnings pertaining to forced fresh air breathing. I will investigate my options, I know some guys that do some bodywork, they may have some PPE. Thanks guys.

Back in the day, i shot a LOT of the Martin Senor acrylic enamel onto stock cars- i got it through a local sponsorship with a NAPA. I used "WET LOOK' hardener and found it (the paint) to be both pretty and tough. Prior to that, I had a sponsorship with Mattos, a dupont distributor, and sprayed their CENTARI acrylic enamel. It was good as well.
In the end- the MS seemed as good as the DuPont to me.

It is the CrossFire paint, I do not have the product number in front of me and I think it was closer to $60 than $50. I think I remember it saying "Acrylic Enamel".

Supplied breathing?? Like SCUBA gear?? I am not going to be in a spray booth, just under an open shed, outside with a AOS paint respirator. Is this not ok??

Scuba will work, what I meant is a mask or preferably hood that is fed fresh air from an intake or turbine several feet away upwind from the fumes. $3-$500. No regular or charcoal mask is cleared for iso's. Much info in the archives about this. Consider the isocyanates in your hardener to be poison, can make you very sick. Being outside or in a ventilated area helps, but you will find that the fumes swirl around you, you will still be getting plenty of iso's. Iso's may not affect you until you have used hardener several times, they may make you sick the first time you use them -- your decision. $60 sounds ok for acrylic enamel, much better than alkyd -- good luck.

The brand is not of critical importance, what is important is the type of paint. For $50 it is likely alkyd enamel, overpriced alkyd enamel at that. If it is acrylic enamel it is probably ok. Alkyd will fade, no matter who makes it. What does it say on the can -- if it just says "enamel" it is likely alkyd. If unsure go to the Martin Senour website and look it up. For hardener you need a supplied air breathing system.

Thanks 135 fan. I recently aquired the flail mower and yesterday I used it to make the 1st cut of my yard. I set it as low as I could and it cut 12" thick grass clean in one pass (new knives)! I could not believe it would cut that clean because I did not intend to ever use it for the yard, just pastures. I left it low and went down the pipeline on my property and it looked like a lawnmower went through. Another thing that surprised me was it ran SMOOTHER than my lawn mower, no vibration at all!
Back to the paint, thanks for the info. If all goes well, I will use if on the Farmall. The guys on the Farmall site talk about PPG, yes this is good paint, on a car... or show tractor. This one will just be my general purpose tractor and since I am repairing/replacing 50 years of wear and tear it should look good too. I just put a Koyker 220 loader on it a few months ago. I may post a pic of the tractor and mower.

I've only used it in spray cans but found it to be one of the best paints I ever used. Wasn't so thin it ran and covered very evenly. I'd recommend it. You have a very good flail mower as well. Dave
