What is your opinion on which is the best HVLP, Have been looking at them but can't decide.

I did a paint test once with three HVLP guns.

Binks vs Sata vs Sharpe

Painted some Farmall H-M fenders.

Same paint mix, same painter.

Sata did the best, Binks was next with the Sharpe comeing in last.

you know what they say about anything even a paint gun you get what you pay for if you want a half assed paint job buy the 80 gun if you want a good paint job go to a paint supply place and get a gun because by the time your done that gun you bought at the paint place will out live that gun from the home cheapo million times over.

A really skilled professional painter can get all there is to offer from top-of-the-line expensive guns. With hack amatures like me, our ability runs out long before the quality of the gun becomes a major factor. I bought one of those Huskee (Home Depot, $79) HVLP guns, then a Sharpe (I believe it's a "platinum" model) off of Ebay. The Sharpe gun is considerably higher quality, although I don't know where it stands against the SATA's and such. Long story short, I can paint ALMOST as good with the cheap gun.

But worth mentioning, as an amature, I've had considerably better results with the HVLP. Lower operating pressure has resulted in less overspray, slicker paint surface, and considerably less wasted paint. I had considerably more problems with runs when I used the siphon guns. Also worth mentioning is an HVLP gun doesn't spit as it's running out of paint. Lower operating pressure can allow you to paint with a smaller air compressor and still have reasonable results. For the record, I was using an old Binks #7 siphon gun prior to switching to HVLP's.

I've found that those of us at the lower end of the experience ladder benifit more by practicing than with buying more expensive equipment.

I am an amature painter and have a Sharpe Platinum and a Sata. The Platinum is an excellent gun. But, I can still see a difference when I use the Sata. I look at it the other way. Professional painters will get a better job out of a $60 gun than I get out of a $400 Sata. On the other hand, since I don't paint very often, I need all the help I can get. The more expensive gun helps me do that. I did not want to spend that much money for a gun, but the Sata and probably the Sharpe Platinum are lifetime guns. I wanted to see if the Sata was better. For me it is.

Im using a Dura-Block 7003GMS. You couldnt ask for a better gun for the price. Plus when I bought mine, it came with 2 nozzle sizes.

steve here are a few different gun examples for you. first set are the hvlp gravity guns. from the left the first 2 are sata jet hr2000. one is for clear, the other for color. last gun is the astro model 97. the astro i use for primers, altho it isnt a bad color or clear gun, but for production here at the shop, the sata"s are the best. second photo are the siphon feed guns. they are old school, but good guns none the less. they do go thru more material compared to the gravity guns, but you can really plow on materials. from the left, devilbiss jga 504, binks model 92, last is a sharpe 775.

steve, as you are in the market for a spraygun, you need to figure out first, what are you going to be painting? what types of paint are you going to be using? what level of quality are you looking for in your paintwork? what is your budget? go to autobody tool mart . com and look at their selection of guns, both by manufacturer and then they have economy guns.i would recommend you buy the best gun you can afford. when you consider the time involved in prepping something for paint, whether its a tractor, truck or vintage hot rod, then add the material costs, plus the paint costs, its a huge chunk of change. my email is open always if you need anything. glenn

No such thing as a best gun. Just avoid the worst guns. With the thinner costs and time to maintain a gun, I toss them after a couple jobs and buy new. Never thought I'd say that 25 years ago.

the stata 3000, iwata and the accu-spray are about the top guns out there, but they are 5-600 dollar guns.

A 600 dollar paint gun for a 200 dollar tractor.

I bought an expensive cup gun years ago when I was painting cars as a side line. I have been using two 60 dollar HVLP guns for the last 6 or 7 years. I cleaned up the old cup gun last fall and by crackie I think my 60 buck guns were ever bit as good. Of course I am not a painter by trade, I just paint and only my own stuff.

I agree. A $70 Home Depot gun is as good as any other gun for the vast majority of DIY painting.

whelp, he dint say price was no object!!!lol, those three are the top guns in the marketplace today. there are quite a few lower prices guns that also do a great job. my first hvlp gravity gun was a cheapie astro gun for under a hundred. its a sata copy, sata parts are interchangeable withit. napa also has some decent guns for the money, and parts are readily available, which, i think is very important. the worst things that happen with spray guns is they get abused and not maintained. cleaning them is the MOST important thing you can do to keep it spraying correctly.

"Whelp" eh? Havn't heard anyone called that in a coons age. Guess I didn't think the guy ever said WHAT he was gonna paint or how much it was worth. How can anyone give him a quallified answer when we don't even know what he in gonna paint or how often or with what products??? Whelps rule!!!

the gun is only part of the problems. i can spray with a home depot gun, harbor frieght gun, but i own 4 satas, one iawata, 4 harbor frieght guns and a couple others. i paint alot. the key to painting is to get a product data sheet from the paint company. on this sheet, if its a good company it will give you gun set up info, air pressure, mixing instructions, and special info like fisheye elimnator. they write the stuff for a reason if one gun has a nozzle of 2.2 and they recommend 1.3 you will drop paint all over and waste it. also the gun manufacturers have pds also. if you put to much air to an hvlp gun the fan will blow apart causing uneven application and possibly runs etc. you will be amazed at the amount of problems people make for themselves by playing chemist. the new coatings are not like the cheap tractor coatings. if you need med reducer and have slow and fast, they dont mix 50/50 and make med. the chemicals may react totally backwards, the acids and stuff might not play well. im not trying to be a know it all, im trying to help, i learnd alot in the last five years reading pds sheets
