Eventually I'm going to tear down my tractor and give it a super nice paint job. But for now I'm getting old parts from junk yards and putting the old boy back together. Some of the parts are going to have to be sand blasted and sanded. Once that is done, can I just spray red primer from the auto store on them to protect them until ready for paint? Or do I have to do something else to protect them from rust?

No, but.... in reply to Mike CA, 11-10-2007 20:51:52
...here's a chance to have some fun with the neighbors. If you're determined to blast/sand/wire wheel those parts, shoot them with primer and then with something like Krylon. Use a different finish color whenever you go buy another can. When you're ready to refinish, shoot a coat of sealer then paint.

If not, then do like the other guys say and put it together as is until you are ready to do the whole tractor at once.

Worst thing you can do. If it does rust you will never know it until the paint blisters off. Use the grungy parts as they are until complete refinish can be done.

Actually, I live in the middle of CA, between the coast and the mountains. Pretty dry.

If the tractor is outside the only primer that will protect it from rust is 2-part epoxy primer, regardless of where you live. If inside, whether or not anything rusts depends on the humidity. In western Kansas, I just let bare metal sit inside until I am ready to paint it. I may do a little sanding prior to priming to make sure I get any "hidden" rust. People in humid climates, particularly those anywhere near salt water can't do that. There are rust protectants such as Picklex 20 $$$, or Must For Rust ($, Home Depot), and others that you can brush on. These will prevent rust as long as the part is inside and kept dry. These are mostly dilute phosphoric acid products. Many people insist that you MUST prime the same day as sandblasting. Where I live I leave bare metal for months with no rust. I assume you live somewhere near the coast of CA. Thus in your case you need to use a protectant, or prime with epoxy soon after you prepare the metal. Please pardon the language, but the red spray can primer is junk -- only my opinion. It will not prevent moisture from getting to the surface, thus rust.
