I sandblasted, primed and painted my tractor in stages over the past year, and now I'm ready for the final paint coat. I used enamel primer and paint (Case IH 2150). I would have rather used a automotive style paint like PPG in retrospect(found out a little too late). Can I add a hardener to the final enamel coat? What surface prep for the painted surfaces should I do? Wet sanding? Will it reduce paint fading over the years? I haven't cleaned or painted the sheetmetal pieces yet(IHC 300), could I switch to a PPG paint and match the color of the resto fo the tractor easily?

Here's the scoop on hardener. you must use hardener in the color coat from start to finish--by this i mean, mix up the paint you are going to use for the finish job, and add the hardener to it, not just in the last coat! go to a good auto paint supply store. ask them if your primer is compatible with the brand of color coat you plan to use! You should use a good enamel sealer before you add the finish coat. This gives a good hiding base, so you don't end up with light and dark spots. A neutral light gray is good--you'll be glad you used it after you're done! Don't put hardener in the sealer! As for sanding the primer, wet sanding is probably best. but dry sanding is done lots of times when using the automotive type of enamel popular about 10 yrs. ago or so. I think its still available. #320 grit paper is o.k. for dry sanding, altho I've used 240 grit for enamel painting. Urethane paint is also good. It has its own type of hardener. some times the auto paint store has specials on some colors, and i'm sure they can mix what you want. It is more expensive than acrylic enamel, but it has lots more gloss. I painted my pickup with it 7 years ago, and it still shines like new! Just follow thedirections on the can as to mixing the hardener in the paint. And remember--only mix up what you think you need, and don't pour the left-over paint back in the can--it'll make the paint in the can hard and unusable!! AAANNNDDD!!! Use a painters dual filter mask for spraying!! You don't want to get that stuff in your lungs!! It'll make them stiff, too! Remember, a refinish job is only as good as the preparation! Rusty Jones
