I am painting a tractor for the first time and am trying to gather up all the info I can before I start. My first question is Should I use clear coat on the sheet metal or will it have a good finish without it?? And also what kind of gun should I get if I am on a limited budget. I know I need a HVLP, but I don't know If I should get a gravity fed gun or a comventional style gun. What brands should I look at?? Thanks In andvance JC

I painted a farmall cub with a cheap conventional(non HVLP) gun from central pneumatic. It was shot with acrylic enamel with a wet look hardner. With six light coats on the sheet metal, the finish rivals most cars. Remember, good prep work and light coats to prevent runs or thick layers of paint that may chip. The hardner helps prevent gas and oil from peeling the paint.
Good luck and have fun,

JC you don't really need an HVLP but you do need a gravity feed gun. I would recommend you use an acrylic enamel rather than a regular synthic enamel. You might want to try a base coat/clear coat combo. Just shoot the paint to get the color and then shoot the clear to get the shine.

You will get plenty of practice with you gun while priming. Use an epoxy primer rather than a laquer primer. Epoxy dries in minutes. Laquer dries in hours (or days).

Some pros will tell you not to use your top coat gun for priming and usually they are correct. BUT if you are on a budget then you do what you have to.

HI JC if this is your first tractor painting I would stick with a good enamel and put hardner in it. You will get a very nice shine if the surfaced is preped right, and I use an industrial epoxy primer I think that is very important. I used HVLP gun that was gravity fed for the first time last week it cost $60.oo I bought it for litte parts but ended up painting the whole tractor with it because it worked very well. I got the gun out of a harbor freight magazine the name of the gun is central pneumatic. If you want to see a picture of the tractor I painted go to tractor photos on this page and look under farmall pictures it is the farmall H that is painted orange
