I just finished painting using Sherwin Williams paint and it went on perfect. However, the clear coat went on a little rougher. A good bit orange peel and a couple of runs. I planned on sanding it with 1200 or better sandpaper using soap and water like color sanding and then rubbing it out. Is that the way to do it to smooth it out. I've never used clear coat before and hope not to again. It was completely different than using paint. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately the buffing procedure is a learned craft much the same as painting. You already experienced that in the paint job.Now if you are planning on learning the buffing craft the same way,you will really have a mess. The most important piece of advise I can give to first timers it is this. Don't practice or learn on the project you are restoring!!!!! Learn to paint and buff on something that doesn't matter. Go get an old hood from the junk yard and pretend it's your tractor..from the ground up.You will not waist near as much materials this way as you will getting your education on your tractor. I admire anyone who wants to learn to do all this themselves. There is the smart way and then there is the way most people will do it.I know it seems like a waist of time and materials but trust me it is not. Good luck on your project!

I've never painted a tractor before and it did turn out pretty good. I figured I saved at least $700 by doing it myself. Come on, you've done everything else on the tractor. Are you going to trust it to some body shop to meet your high standards?
It really wasn't that hard, by the time you get through priming it three times, you have mastered the technique. With the paints and primers today they flash dry so quick that you can do it all at once.

Get the video from Eastwood Corp., done by a professional painter, Kevin Tetz (not sure of last name). He is currently the moderator of the www.paintucation.com forums. It will tell you things you would never think of yourself. You start with about 1200, then go the finer grades. A buffer, although not complicated, needs some explanation.
