Guys I need your advice! I am going to repaint my Farmall M. What paint do you recommend to use? I don't want to use a hardner. I don't have the proper equipment and I don't want to take any chances. I don't have to have the best brand and most expensive either. I just want a good quality paint to use.

I am confused CNKS?

You said At least use epoxy primer and a good (non-hardened) sadndable surfacer.

So you put the epoxy primer on but I don"t understand the non-hardened sandable surfacer? What do you mean by that? DO you lay the epoxy down and then spray something else and then go back and paint?

Sorry I am lost

THanks,

LBH

Ditto what CNKS said. If you want some alternatives, here's some that I am aware of:

1) PPG's OMNI MAE acrylic enamel w/o hardener - recoating questionable/not recommended by PPG

2) DuPont's NASON Fast Dry acrylic enamel - recoatable after 48 hours per the tech sheet

3) DuPont's Centari w/Ultra 1K Pac formulation - recoatable after 4 hours per the tech sheet - probably pricey

These three do not require iso-containing additives. There are others, I am sure - especially in PPG's and DuPont's commercial/industrial lines and from other manufacturers, but I am not familiar with them. Color shade reproduction could be questionable in any of the three. Sample test sprayouts recommended with small quantities to determine adequacy.

If you are looking for a non-iso, lacquer type of surfacer that is an alternative to the OMNI MP181 that CNKS mentions, look into DuPont's 131S, Fill 'N Sand.

If I were you, I'd look seriously into the 2150 dealer paint. I've never used it but it gets mentioned a lot in this forum. I understand it's an acrylic modified alkyd enamel - a hybrid. As such, it's debatably on par with any of the above, except possibly the Centari. You'd want to verify the recoatability though - just in case you need to repair any application errors.

At least use epoxy primer and a good (non-hardened) sadndable surfacer. Examples are PPG MP170 epoxy and MP181 primer surfacer. As to topcoat, I believe the 2150 Case-IH sells is adequate, although I have used it only for color matching purposes. Otherwise use a non-hardened acrylic enamel from PPG/Dupont's, etc economy lines. Even going the "cheap" route, you are likley to have over $200 in paint if you use the good primers. You can use the tractor store alkyd enamel, that will be ok for a while, but it will not last, particularly if you don't have the equipment for safe use of hardener. Some people don't use primer with 2150, just sand and spray (some people just pressure wash and spray). IMO that is not the way to do it, although it may initially look ok. Probably cost you around $75 that way. You can also use the primer sold by Case-IH, I have had no experience with it.
