Hi

Does anyone out there have an Avery Ro-trak tractor or maybe have some experience or memory of one. I've seen a couple here and there but never had a chance to talk to the owner.

When I was six my uncle had one for a couple of years and I often think of it when I see anything about "orphan tractors" I do remember some thing about it, it was pretty fast on the road at that time and because it had fairly big fenders I was allowed to ride on it some.

But, all wasn't well with that tractor and it was traded for an H Farmall in early 1941 and no one knew where it went from the IH dealer in Somerset, Michigan. I guess no one cared either because it had a lot of problems and wasn't very dependable.

Well, anyhow, it would be "cool" maybe to hear about this Yeller tractor again, you don't see 'em very often

Yeah Mickey, you've got an Avery Ro-trak, Glad to know that. I see the tractor Ed Spiess had on the Classic Tractor program on RFD-TV, in fact that got me to thinking about them again. I saw one at a big antique tractor auction at Galt, California a few years ago, it looked to be in just "fair" condition-wrong fenders, front wheels looked all sprung out of whack and didn't sound too good. But, I thought it ought to be worth 2 or 3 grand to me because of what I remembered about it. Well, forget it, there were some serious tractor buyers there and as I recall it brought around 6 grand. There was one at the National Threshers show at Wauseon, Ohio 5 years ago, owned by someone from Saline, Michigan but I never saw it there since and never followed up on it. They are one unique tractor, I don't believe anyone ever tried that type of front end design other than Avery. I remember parts of it(bent and broken) hanging in the tractor shed. My Grandfather had a big Avery Thresher that he really liked, so I guess that's why my Uncle got the tractor. I've gotten into a few arguments about the color of Avery tractors that are yellow, most people think Avery's were yellow after they became part of M-M's line. Is there much intrest in your tractor at shows?

The Avery Ro-Trak was made by the Avery Farm Machinery Co. of Peoria, Ill. It was bright yellow, almost the color of "Safety Yellow". The Avery tractor that Minneapolis Moline bought was the BF Avery Co. of Louisville, Ky. (we have one of them, too). They were two entirely different companies. After MM bought them in 1951 they became Prairie Gold like the rest of the MM line and were the BF model. BF Avery also sold the General GG tractor from Cletrac. It was Cletrac yellow. It became the BF Avery Model A with a larger engine. The Peoria Avery Farm Machinery Co. went out of business after the Ro-Trak model didn't sell. People always like to see it at shows because the front end is so unusual. Hope this settles some of the arguments on the color.

I have a M.M. Avery Model V, ser. No. 6V-306. It has been painted yellow, near the safety yellow, but when I started cleaning it up, I found lots of the more orange-looking color in places that seem to be the original color. I think that's the M.M. prairie gold that it was painted at the factory. Any idea what the tractor might be worth? It runs, but smokes, drives, brakes work, all gears work, pto/pulley works, hyd. lift works, has front part of cultivator, no rear part. Thanks, Stan

According to the serial # list I have your tractor was built in 1951 by Minn.-Moline after the takeover of BF Avery. It was probably painted the Prairie Gold shade before 1957. I don't know any paint #'s for that shade. I also don't know what it's worth. Maybe some of the BF Avery or MM collectors can help you out.

We have a 1938 Avery R-Trak! My late father-in-law, Jim Layton, was featured on the 1992 Classic Tractor Calendar & Video with it. He saw two at a fair in Delaware in 1938 and never saw another one until he found this one in pieces in a woods in the mid-1970s. The late Ed Spiess put together a list of owners a few years ago. He only had 9 or 10. He didn't think they built over 100. They were the last ditch effort of the Avery Farm Machinery Co. to survive. WWII ended the company.
