Hi, Jim i have got a Leyland 285 syncro that lived and worked at bathgate factory, it had a brush fitted to the front of the tractor. this is a unusual leyland with some distinct differances.It has side pannels all the way from cab to frontgrill covering complete engine compartment and very profesionally done.the cab roof is painted white,gearstick's & handclutch have not been painted,this tractor has only done 152hrs from new.The paint is still on the clutch&brake pedals,the labelis still on the exhuast pipe that goes upthe backof cab, can you remember of it! or explain anything to help me know about the tractor? it has never been regestered for the road,acording to the serial no it was the end of april beging of may1979 it went through the production line.

Any help would be great thanks Angus

I have a gas Leyland 154 and it is a fine tractor. I have had success getting parts from several sources. Wengers of Myerstown PA has many used parts 1-800-451-5240. Manuals and some parts are available from Miller-St. Nazianz in St. Nazianz, Wisconsin 920-773-2121. Impossible to find stuff such as lift cylinder seals and steering box bearings I got from J.Charnley & Sons in Lancashire, England Tel # (02154)854103. They are great people to deal with and have everything. Their prices are good to excellent on most stuff. Seal kit was $6.79 US including shipping. Good luck and lets keep these mighty mite tractors running.

As per your request I have some mechanical knowlege of Leyland tractors ... in particular the 154 gasoline model. Having owned 2 154's and putting them to use on the farm I've struggled to find parts and such, so If your Leyland you are interested in is a 154 I could give aid in the parts aspect. (Locations, ect) I can also say from personal experience what commonly can go wrong mechanically with such a tractor.
///////////////////////////////////////////
My advise is if you are thinking of purchasing a 154 for "collecting purposes only" go for it. However, if your intent is for day-to-day farm or yard use, be advised parts are few and far between and as expensive as hell. My 154's were the best darn tractors I've ever owned and they fit my particular use the best. However, in the hobby of restoring tractors, both were sold because of the expensiveness of parts or the lack there of.
///////////////////////////////////////////////
Hope I was of some help.

I have a blue tractor that says Leland on the hood.
It is a 255, 4 cylinder diesel. Can anyone tell me if this is the same as Leyland? Or if not, will the parts interchange? Both being British.....
Thank you in advance.

The Leyland tractors i've been around are a 270 and a 272(newer). The 272 is a 1981 with a 9f/3r synchro shuttle tranny and a big 4cyl with a turbo. it pushes 80hp. The 270 is an older version also turbocharged, and I'm attempting to buy it, for Pulling. the trany on this is 10f/2r
both are on 18.4-30 rubber 2wd. I know one thing, these tractors do produce alot of power, and work great for haying, and moving forage wagons to and from, due to their speed and power, just don't get around a mud hole though, they are light and very powerful, my uncles 272 burries itself quick.

I have a 154 and there was a metal to metal sound in the clutch. I took it apart, and the face of the throw-out bearing is all ruffed up and the fingers in the pressure plate look like they have been over adjusted.? Is there a way of adjusting the clutch other than the outside adjustment? Do you know of any place to buy parts around the Portland Oregon USA area? I do have a manuel but I do need some moral support and guidance. Thank you for your help. Sincerly Elmer Hibbard Dayton Oregon 503-868-7667

Leyland Tractors were made in Scotland in the late
1960's and 1970,s they were the sucessors to British Motors Corpartions Line of Nuffield Tractors when that company was amalgamated into British Leyland. Their first three models were 154 a small tractor, 344 a 55 horse model and 384 a 70
horse model. In the late 70's early 80's after fiancial set backs, labour, and quality control problems they were sold to a company called Marshall in Gainsbourgh England and were changed from blue to yellow. Marshall seemed to Withdraw from the Canadian market and disappear. I understand that they were bought out or closed down for economic reasons. Hope this help. Others may know more. I used to work for Marshall. We made over 300 improvements to the Leyland design, including introducing a 90 hp version and a radically new 100/115 hp tractor, but did not make enough to be profitable. Marshall went bust and was moved to Scunthorpe where a few were built, with links to Massey ferguson/IMT technology. The name was later used to brand Steyr tractors sold in the UK.

Nuffield tractors were good but the 4/65 killed them off. ive got nothing against the 4/65 in fact my dad owns a 4/65 however as good as it was few people bought them due to a bad reputation that had been stirred up by a few farmers. to try and revitalise sale nuffield became part of bl which renamed them as leyland tractors. the 344 was a direct decendant of the 4/65 with minor improvments to the engine and a complete facelift on the body. sales once again began to drop and leyland was on the virge of a recievership. The Nickersfield organisation took hold and togeter with the already conquered marsall tractors began building marshalls with leylands bodyshell and an almost completely cahnged 4/65 3.8 litre engine that was now turbocharged. the marshall 802 was a very impressive and became a fast powerful and reliable tractor but profits (or lack of them) destroyed the company and the william morris legend came to an end.

tractors in my dads collection are:- 4/65 344 262 802 lazer 36 and a universal m4+3

thanks

Really happy to find someone else to talk to about the Leyland 154 gas model. Jim, George, anyone...could you please contact me with information on operation of this tractor and any implements that would work well with it, i.e., loader, scraper, disk, plow, bush hog, etc.

I have one that seems to be in pretty good running condition. Any idea what they are worth?

Where would you even begin to find implements that work with it. Where is the serial # located.

Thank you for your response in advance.

Don,t know much about the gas Leyland 154. I understand that they were a very good little tractor
that evolved from the BMC Mini Tractor and that parts are getting harder to find at present. I am more familiar with the larger Leylands as I own a Leyland 344 which my dad bought new in 1970. It is a 55 horsepower model . Not many 154s imported into Ontario , Canada where I live.
Sorry that I don,t know more. I always thought that the 154 looked cute.
Yours Sincerely; George
