I have and 84 or 85 Long 610 diesel tractor that needs help. I traded some stuff for it and it has some problems, runs pretty good. The guy I got it from says he has used it as is for 3 years. I am trying to shred and overgrown and dead field and cant keep it in any of the low gears. If I try the gear handles wiggle and pop out of gear. Currently, I believe I only have 2 and 4 high. Also, the first week I had it the thing started right up every time, now I have to jump start EVERY time. The alternator looks like a car alternator, is it specific for this tractor?? I am on a tight budget (but who with livestock isnt?) so trying to get it fixed cheaply. Yes, I am a woman, but I do just about everything needed on the old '82 Chevy dually too. Thanks in advance for the help. I really want to get this old tractor back into good running condition.

I have used the new one wire alternator on on my hot rod Chevy truck for over three years now and it is great. Just replaced the one on my Long 510 and used the same type. It's just too easy to hook up.

I have a Long 560. The alternator on mine is a standard GM model. The local auto parts store had a tractor book and the model in their book matched the alternator I was replacing (maybe the old one came from the same store, which proves nothing).

I can't help with the gear question except to note that my 560 has popped out of second gear low range a couple of times going downhill.
