What have you found to be the best method of cold starting an air-cooled Deutz such as an F4 912?

What exactly is the cold start device on these engines that is in the intake tract?

I have a D6806 and will need to start it in temperatures down to around -10°F without the windchill.

Do you have an engine heater? If you have an engine heater and a glow plug it should start. Our 6006 in over 30 years of loyal service has only failed to start once that I can remember and that was because the starter failed. I've seen dad start it when it was so cold the hydraulic pump squealed for 20 minutes. It was plugged in while we did chores (3 hours) and one shot from the glow plug. Also we always put rotella T 10w which makes a big difference.

As I found out the hard way the night before last - starting the D6806 in 0°F ambient air temps will be hard to do in its current state.

The battery (950CCA Farm&Fleet) was a bit low - so the crank speed wasn't up to par. Even after jumping it with one of those small lead-acid jump boxes, and using a battery charger I still couldn't get it to fire.

I even tried a few whiffs of ether, heating the jugs with a hair dryer for a few minutes and aiming the hair dryer into the air cleaner to heat the intake air. Still no dice after all that. I think this thing has summer oil in it and that sure isn't helping with the crank speed.

Once I can figure out what kind of oil the Germans recommend for this F4L913 - I'll see if my idea to go with Shell Rotella-T 5W-40 full synthetic is a good or bad idea.

I'm going to try like heck to get it going tomorrow as-is - we're expecting high temps of about 28°F - heatwave! 8)
Cheers,

Matt
