Just thought I'd turn up some 3/4" pins to fit a top link to my Long 445 ready to run a bush hog & mower I'm picking up Wednesday night.
Pins are great & fit the top link easy, but cannot get them into the toplink support on the tractor.
On the left side, the bend in the draft sensing spring prevents the pin from sliding in & on the right there's a casting that stops a straight push. I might just get a pin in from this side in the bottom hole if I grind a bit from the casting, but I don't really want to do that...
A 5/8 pin goes in fine but of course slops about, so how on earth can I get the proper 3/4" pin in place. I'm stumped - Please Jim in NC or anyone else with a Long 445 or Allis 5040 tell me how it's done!!

The others are right. Grind a flat place on the end of the pin that fits against the spring. The flat area will also prevent it from turning. Align your flat area so it will fit and it will be easy to place your locking click pin on the other end to keep the whole shebang in place, It also has to be a specific length-not too long. I have made my own to replace worn or lost ones.

Simply grind a flat angle on the head end of pin so that it will clear the spring.

I'll try the pin grinding - I was concerned about the loss of bearing area, not so much for the topper, but the backhoe is probably a ton.
I'll try grinding the minimum until I can just get it to fit & also shorten the pin to just the right length with a smaller R clip to secure.
Back to the lathe - thanks to GEOK & Traditional Farmer for the responses

It has to be just the right length and I think it has to come in from the left side. The original pins have a lip welded on one side to hold the pin to slip them thru but not let them go thru the hole.Shaving off a little off the pin on the opposite side of the lip would help too
