I have been offered a chance to buy a Nuffield tractor. The guy said it is about a 45 HP tractor with a 3 cylnder diesel engine. He said it runs good and operates but he has a hard time shifting it. I don't know exactly that may mean. It has power steering. He wants 1500$. I'm going to look at it Saturday but needed any info on these tractors and is that a good price assuming no major problem like a clutch or transmission. I've never seen one of these tractors so any help is appreciated. Jerry

A clutch should not be a problem to obtain as it should have a Borg & Beck. Any auto parts outfit should be able to run one down. A 3/45 is almost indestructable!

Nuffield turned out to be a 3/45 model. Engine ran fine but the clutch was the problem. The clutch was not working at all. The tires were good but the sheet metal was rough. I did not buy it. Thanks for all the information.

hey jrry,
if the problem is clutch related, the only thing that helps you out mechanicly is that the tractor does NOT need to be split to do the clutch, the fuel tank is removed and then the top half of the bell housing comes off, the you can get at the clutch. With a three cyclinder engine it is one of models the earliest being a Universal Three, with a five speed transmission, then came the 3/42, also with a five speed, and then the 10/42 with a ten speed transmission. thee were all around 40hp, and are sound tractors although some parts are getting difficult to get. hope this helps, oj in mb.

Sounds like a model 342..They are a rock solid fuel efficient tractor when working properly..The difference between a shifting problem caused by a clutch not releasing properly causing gear grinding and a bad transmision shafts etc. causing hard shifting are like night and day..i think that if the tractor just needs a clutch and the engine and rest are in great shape then the price is fair..If it has a bad transmission shaft or gears etc..It is too much and most people don't want to try to tackle that job as you will have more into it than they are worth...They are excellent tractors and don't get the recognition they deserve..but they also don't sell for much..That's my 2 cents worth...

thanks Galan. If it has a bad transmission or clutch I probably will not buy it but otherwise I will. Jerry

Nuffield became Leyland which became Marshall.
