I have a Long 445 that has very sluggish PTO operation. Tractor has new and full hydraulic fluid. In-line filter is new. PTO is very slow to raise and after operating maybe thirty minutes it practically looses all lift. Power steering and front loader work well. Now, if I can seperatie the two,is this a pressure issue or machanical issue? I have had this tractor over 25 years and it has searved me well. Never used PTO but very little. Has always been sluggish.

I read your post and have experienced the same trouble and went through the same corrective actions you mentioned to no avial. Was wondering if you ever got your problem fixed and what you actually did to fix it?

If you are talking about the 3 point hitch, there is a responsiveness lever on the front, right side body of the lift. Turning clockwise will make the lift rise faster and counterclockwise will make it work slower. Try this first. May need to check other things after this.

Thanks Jim. Moving the lever throughout its range (stop to stop) does not make any noticiable difference in lift responsivness. Next step please.

Loosen the pressure valve where the hydraulic line connects at the left front of lift and let a little fluid bleed out. Tighten and see if this helps. Even though it is slow, When the lifts goes to top, will it stay up while the engine is off? Will it lift implements? You could have a bad oring on the piston in the lift. I replaced one years ago. Not too bad of a job. There still could be some trash in the filter. If you had the filter out, Did you check orings and make sure the flat washer on the end of the cartridge?

Yes I did the bleeding. No improvement. With engine off, lift will slowly (over some period of time bleed down. Will lift implements for maybe 30 minutes of operation. After tractor cools will lift again. Filter (as you know) is hard to see once you insert it but over the years I have replaced it and/or cleaned and lift has always been slow. Could it be a hydraulic pressure issue? Have you tried to measure the fluid pressure?

I have never checked mine for hyd. pressure. I have 2, a 360 and a 445. Is the oil milky or gray looking? This would indicate moisture. The oil level is checked with dipstick on the right of the transmssion cover beside the return line. If the oil is thick and gooey, I 'll bet your filter iis dirty. sent me your phone #. MY email is open. I will try to call you after 9 pm EST.

The hydralic fluid and filter were replaced last year when I replaced my power steering pump. It is not milky. The trasmission is filled with AW 45 hydraulic fluid.

You said PTO, I think you are talking about the 3 point hitch. If so, have you ever cleaned the hydraulic filter? This is a Fiat licened built unit correct? If so it might be time to adjust your PTO clutch as well. More questions?

You're correct. It is the three point hitch. The filter is new. Now what about that adjustment you referred to?
